Close by the River Dove on the very borders of Staffordshire and Derbyshire, Marston Montgomery is a peaceful old place. A very fine timbered old hall is at the centre of the village, named after the ancient Montgomery family. The village is a thriving community, with a pub and annual Well Dressings in June and is a fantastic base to enjoy the southern dales along with the Staffordshire Moorlands. Lying at the southern end of the Peak District National Park you will discover Ashbourne which is a perfect example of an English market town - market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and alms-houses. In its heyday in the 18th century, the town was a fashionable social centre, and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but don’t expect a bargain! For those who prefer more outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by.
