In a rural location on the edge of the ancient village of Castle Hedingham these two detached single-storey holiday homes set in the owners’ 10 acres of grounds have far-reaching views over open countryside. The accommodation is well-presented and has the added benefit of a heated indoor swimming pool - the pool is shared between the two cottages refs W43379 and W43233 and both are allocated 3 hours of private use per day one hour in the morning one in the afternoon and one in the evening - the rest of the time is shared use. There is also a large fully equipped barbecue area which can be hired. Castle Hedingham lies in the valley of the River Colne on the ancient road between Colchester 20 miles west and Cambridge 30 miles east it still retains many beautiful timber-framed medieval and Tudor buildings including Hedingham Castle a Norman castle the ancestral seat of the Earls of Oxford. The area is ideal for walking or cycling. Nearby places of interest include the Colne Valley steam railway Sudbury and Saffron Walden. This property is in need of a makeover to make it fit for the eight guests it is capable of accommodating. If you want to self-cater, forget it. We were a family group of five and could just about manage to cook ourselves meals by judicious planning of menus. There is a lack of saucepans, utensils and cutlery (two teaspoons), only seven mugs and a mish-mash of glasses. Every square inch of floor creaks alarmingly making it quite noisy. Having children dashing about in the place would be awful I suspect. In the bathroom (one bathroom for eight people!) the tiny handbasin is coming off the wall, the cold tap is very difficult to turn on/off and the hot water comes from a small, inadequate wall heater. The electric shower unit is old and gives not much more than a trickle of water. The shower curtain has seen better days a long while ago, and where do eight people hang and dry their towels? It was disappointing that in this day and age to find the electricity is an extra and a £200 cash deposit (no receipt offered) is required on arrival. Why, given that the weekly charge on this property is at the top end of the market. The price does not reflect the condition of the property. We also found the games rooms were looking quite worn and the pool tables showed signs of being heavily used but no maintenance. We were not tempted to use the swimming pool as we were concerned about its state and upkeep in light of other things. However, given all the faults, and despite them, we had a good week aided by the weather so we could get out and about. The local dog walking was good with some interesting meadows. We would recommend The Bell Inn, excellent pizzas and real ales.

A group of seven of us stayed in this cottage for four days over Christmas. The cottage was clean and well equipped and in a good location. Would go again but not in the winter. We particularly wanted somewhere with activities and although there is a pool, it wasn't very warm and inviting. The shower room in the cottage needs updating. There was no hot water to the bathroom sink and the shower pressure was poor. Also some of the beds were not very comfortable. Overall though, we enjoyed our stay. The owner's son and his wife were very helpful. Oh and one more thing, you need to pay a deposit on arrival from which they deduct the cost of electricity. I don't remember being made aware of this in advance. This is the first cottage I have stayed in where electricity is not included in the price.

The owner was a pleasure Nice having a swimming pool and games rooms available And a field for the dogs to have a run Near the castle, unfortunately it was closed for the season. There are a couple of not so good bits .... The floors in the cottage ‘squeak’ maybe because the cottage is cold and then warms up when people stay, and be honest it drove us mad! The shower needs updating and possibly the oven. But have to say despite all that we would stay there again as the positives outway the negatives

Didn’t realise when booking no bath, with 6 month old baby, very difficult. Bathroom was very damp. Pool not warm enough for adults, let alone babies, did ask for temperature to be turned up, but still cold. However, ideal location and extremely clean. very friendly man Terry who runs it. Ideal location for families with dogs. Maybe more ideal for group of adults. We were out a lot and ideal location for places we went to. Could do with a bathroom revamp.

Loved this place, had so much to keep the kids amused, swimming pool was great and table tennis and air hockey great fun and all just a couple of steps away. Lots of lovely walks to take the dog too.
