• About Fasque Castle Cottages - Gardener’s Bothy

Providing luxury accommodation, this spacious property boasts a large garden, up-to-date appliances and lies in a stunning setting surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Nestling in the grounds of Fasque Estate, these five stunning detached cottages sit in the glorious countryside of southern Aberdeenshire, on the border of the Scottish Highlands. Ideal for a short or long break at any time of the year, they have been meticulously designed with traditional comfort and an individual elegance in mind. They range from a fairytale romantic hideaway, to sumptuous family homes. Guests are free to roam the extensive grounds of the estate, which is home to a wealth of wildlife - look out for the private deer herd on the banks of the lochan, or you may see squirrels, woodpeckers and buzzards whilst following the many paths and walkways that criss-cross the grounds. Activities are available on site, including shooting, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding, and catering and housekeeping are available by arrangement. The estate would have been one of the main employers in the area. Employees were housed in the properties on the estate, as indeed they still are today. Sir John Gladstone bought the Fasque mansion in 1829 and his son, William Gladstone, Queen Victoria’s prime minister, was a frequent visitor throughout his life.

Gardeners Bothy (ref UKC2429) is a gorgeous house offering a luxurious interior in convivial surroundings. It has a large open plan living area, and the kitchen opens out to the secluded patio and garden on two sides. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor and one on the first, which has large Velux windows maximising the light and views. The Garden Rooms (ref UKC2426) makes for a truly romantic retreat, with its turret, compact kitchen and cosy open fires in the living room and bedroom. Set in the walled garden of the estate, this is a wonderful property offering privacy and has been imaginatively furnished to emphasise comfort and luxury. The Gardeners Cottage (ref UKC2427) has large sliding patio doors in the kitchen which open out to a sun filled patio. Enjoy a glass of wine or al fresco dining in total privacy. This property lets the outside in and offers an exceptional level of comfort. Surrounded by its own private garden, Avenue Cottage (ref UKC2428) is a delightful two bedroom cottage that has been elegantly furnished throughout. With up-to-date facilities and zip and link beds, it offers ideal accommodation for families or friends. The Stables (ref UKC3863) was built in a square shape with a fully enclosed inner courtyard landscaped with water features and stylish planting, the house is a wonderful choice for extended families with children of all ages. Guests will love the different sitting areas, styled with flair and comfort in mind and the beautiful bedrooms offer a boutique experience with partial walls concealing extravagant en-suite bathrooms, luxurious beds and plenty of space.

Country houses and castles abound in the surrounding areas, such as Crathes Castle near Banchory, with its turrets and gargoyles. There are gardens and woodland walks, as well as craft activities for the children. The ruins of Dunnottar Castle may look familiar to film fans, as the castle was one of the inspirations for Disney Pixar’s animated ’Brave’. Dating back to 1824, Fettercairn Distillery near Laurencekirk is one of Scotland’s oldest malt whisky distilleries, and offers summer tours Monday to Saturday. Royal Lochnagar Distillery lies next to Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside, and retains much of its original charm. Match your desire for whisky knowledge to one of Lochnagar’s three tours throughout the year. Brechin Castle Centre provides a variety of activities for families, including nature trails, miniature railway and model farm. For those keen on wildlife, there is a visitor centre at Montrose Basin Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy a telescopic view of the local wildlife, from migratory birds to seals. Visitors to Fasque Castle are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. For golfers, the championship links at St Andrews and Carnoustie are tantalisingly close, and several local golf courses are available

The cottage was lovely in a beautiful location with lovely walks on the doorstep and overall was lovely. Just a few things lacking/wrong: The cooker was really dirty and I spent my first morning cleaning it all. There weren't enough kitchen pots (serving dishes etc) and what was there weren't big enough when cooking for 5/6 people. We had some friends in another cottage on the same estate so we cooked alternatively for each other. Our cottage lacked some things like a colander yet my friends cottage had 2? The shower in the en-suite was blocked, someone did come and look at it but didn't fix it. Overall we had a lovely break and would recommend this cottage and we would love to return at some point in the future. Only one other thing to make it amazing would be to add a hot tub!

Beautiful house in a fantastic peaceful setting, very clean. It was lovely to sit and watch the birds. My only criticism was that the kitchen had very little equipment for example no potato peeler, matches etc I would highly recommend it and we will likely return at some point.

A beautiful and thoughtfully modernised cottage/Bothy in the fabulous private and gated grounds of Fasque House with access to lovely walks though the grounds from the front door. The Bothy is well equipped, with comfortable bedrooms and a spacious lounge/kitchen diner with fabulous views across the grounds. This is a fabulous place to getaway from it all. We'd love to return.

Beautiful cottage in great tranquil location. Some equipment small for size of cottage I.e frying pan and toaster only big enough for two when cottage is for six not an issue for us as we were just a couple on our own but if you want two slices of toast each you have to do one at a time. Heating broke down while we were there but was sorted out quickly within the hour. Bedding was excellent and if high quality, great welcome pack and bathroom amenities. A shame that the pub in the village has closed down as no where to go for dinner in the evening unless travelling a fair bit. Need some signage for cottages no sign for Gardners cottage and no sign on left turn for the three cottages that are down that roils easily missed in dark.

We absolutely loved Gardener's Bothy. It's beautifully and sympathetically converted, and in a fabulous location. We watched red squirrel, deer, and lots of birds from the lounge. Everything is top quality: the beds, bed linen, furnishings, etc. Loved the chandeliers! Our favourite ever holiday cottage.
