    Situated in a peaceful location, this holiday property makes an ideal holiday base from which to explore the surrounding area. The area offers a tremendous amount to occupy guests, with golf courses, sailing, horse riding, cycling amongst many other adventurous activities available locally. For those with young children, there are also a number of great days out on the doorstep. If arts and culture are a passion, a quick glance at the surroundings will see exactly why the region has inspired so many artists, writers and craftsmen. Great Salkeld is a picture-postcard village with red sandstone cottages, clustered by the village church. The village inn, just 200 yards away serves local real ale. The property is part of Wetheral Cottages, which is surrounded by well-maintained gardens that lead to a small paddock adjacent to the cottage, which is great space for play or adventure within the grounds. The village playground, 100 yards away, offers swings, junior assault course as well as hard and grassed areas for ball games.

    Whilst appreciating the original age of the property Garth is most definately in need of some updating. Cracked bath panel, damp in places and pretty inadequate kitchen utensils are the first issues which spring to mind. That said the beds were clean and comfortable and the property was warm when required. The location is good for exploring the area and the local pub is a great find which added up to a good week but was frustrated at what should have been a great property let down by lack of TLC.

    Lovely location. Cottage was very dark. Living space was a lot smaller than it looked on the website. Quite a few cobwebs, items missing from the kitchen, radio didn't work. Other feedback earlier in the year had pointed out broken furniture and it was still broken in May. Garden furniture was broken and unsafe so couldn't use it. It needs some effort put into the garden to be able to get the best use of it.

    Unfortunately the first night we had no heating...a night before was -8, so we thank God that was not the night, but still very cold. The people in charge were on holiday, so they couldn't help, but there was a young lady who gave us an electric radiator, bless her! If you travel for a long

    We had small children and although it was a little isolated, the peaceful location was superb. We are none drinkers and unfortunately walking is difficult for my wife, but the park was immaculate and the children loved it. Penrith is close for shopping especially groceries and we enjoyed the drive in to Windermere and cruised both Windermere and Ullswater. The cottage was lovely and had all the equipment you could wish for. The beds were comfortable affording a good nights sleep and the log burner in the lounge was nice on the cool evenings. Would we stay here again err YES!

    Here's a professionally managed small enclave of cottages. Garth ticked all our boxes. Within an easy drive to Penrith (worth a visit) and set amidst beautiful countryside. As a side note, though the local pub is very close, it is worth jumping in the car for a short ride to The Featherston Arms in Kirkoswald where a better pint and a warmer welcome awaits. 9/10
