Great get away from it all cottage. Feels miles from anywhere but only takes 20mins to get to Dumfries. There's plenty to see in the area, went to Dumfries House, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Threave Gardens in our short stay. Lovely area

Please note I was previously at this cottage last Autumn and left a very good review. Unfortunately last week (first week in April) we abandoned the week after 4 nights; because it was too cold, because it felt a bit grubby, and because we both had upset stomachs from the water quality. Temperature: the cottage was very cold (it felt like it had been left cold and empty all winter) and we both could not stay warm outside of the living room. There was inadequate heating in both bedrooms and the kitchen and bathroom were both uncomfortably cold. Cleanliness: The place just didn't seem very clean and, given that it was the first week of the new season, we were surprised that it just felt a bit grubby, especially the kitchen floor and some plates/cups/glasses. I washed everything before using. Water: The water was brackish and peaty. It actually tasted very nice but it gave us both stomach issues to the extent we felt uncomfortable to stay any longer. A very disappointing experience. I appreciate that the weather at this time of year is not great but the cottage was simply not equipped for comfort for 0-10 degrees temperatures outside. Sadly we will not be back.

A fantastic escape from it all. The peaceful location and the remote area lends itself to the experience. A good place for walking and cycling.

We looked for a cottage that would suit our needs and found Gilchristland Cottage. It was a cosy cottage and had what we were looking for. The only drawback back was no off street parking but there was a piece of land opposite large enough to park the car. Plenty of equipment including w/m, tumble dryer, fridge, freezer even a dish washer and a small TV (not that we watched much ) There was no wifi which was unfortunate as we were in the midst of dealing with solicitors. We managed to get over the lack of the computer by using our phone and going into Dumfries to an internet cafe. Having said this it did not spoil the much needed break.

If your idea of real luxury is fresh air, natural beauty, no light pollution and silence, then this is the cottage for you. Spacious and warm, with a wood-burner in the living room, and with a large, well equipped kitchen, this is a gorgeous cottage to get away from the world. Although close to Dumfries and surrounding attractions, this cottage has a very real sense of isolation, which was simply wonderful. I had a couple of questions during our stay which the owner responded to very quickly. Please note my review is based on the adjoining cottage, also available for rent, lying empty during the rental period.

Another lovely week in this beautiful cottage. Very quiet and peaceful just what we wanted. The closest shop is around 3 miles away and the small town of Thornhill is about 5 miles away. Don't go if you want amenities on your door step. Lovely walks with the dogs. The cottage is well equipped and warm. The owner is very welcoming, has a chat if you want to but is happy to leave you alone to enjoy your holiday. There are plenty of walks locally and in the area, places of interest around but this does often mean using the car. Will definitely return. Suits our holiday needs perfectly.
