Gill Cottage lies in a rural location in the village of Crosby Garrett which is now part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is famous for the Roman helmet that was found on land above the house, and was sold for over two million pounds at auction in London! Gill Cottage is ideal for families or couples who wish to enjoy a holiday in the Eden Valley with the Lake District National Park within easy reach. The cottage lies on the edge of the quiet farming village and has rural views from every window. There is a small village shop and post-office, but with Kirkby Stephen just 4 miles away, there is a good choice of local shops, pubs and restaurants to visit. The quaint town of Kirkby Londsdale is further afield at around 37 miles, and has its own attractions including Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View. The market towns of Penrith and Kendal with their castle ruins, are both 20 miles away, and Carlisle with its castle and Tullie House Museum is 50 miles. Another castle can be found at Appleby-in-Westmorland. Penrith is also home to the Rheged Centre with something for all the family. Chocoholics will love the Chocolate Factory in Orton, whilst Hawes is home to the Wensleydale Cheese Factory, made famous by the TV characters ’Wallace and Gromit’. Nearby attractions include the Settle to Carlisle railway line linking Carlisle and Leeds. Occasionally, steam trains can be seen crossing the Crosby Garrett Viaduct from the front of the property. There are walks straight from the door and quiet country lanes making it a fantastic location for cyclists and walkers alike. For nature lovers, Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are a short distance away, whilst the tourist towns of Windermere, Keswick and Pooley Bridge are all within 45 minutes. On the generally uncongested roads, greater distances can be travelled to places in less time. Small village shop 550 yards, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

A warm welcome at a beautiful, spacious but cosy cottage in a superb location. Fantastic walks and views and lovely local towns and villages to visit. Great to relax in the hot tub, see the steam trains from the window and see a red squirrel close up.

A group of us stayed for a 60th birthday. Ideal location for what we wanted. We had a few nice walks out from the cottage and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The cottage its self was very spacious, much more so than the pictures suggest. The dining area was great to all be able to eat together and adults and children both indulged in the hot tub. The cottage was immaculately cleaned and it was great to meet sandy who owned the cottage who could do enough for you. She was always on hand if you needed advice on where to go for walks, local towns or food. Would definately reccomend and hope to return soon.

We spent a long weekend at Gill Cottage in February and it was fabulous. The cottage was immaculate, fully equipped and very comfortable. The owners were very friendly and very respectful of our privacy at the same time. You can go for a walk straight out of the back door across fields, giving you a great view of the surrounding area and fells in the distance. We saw the steam train travelling from Carlisle to Settle from the lounge window, which is just one of the many lovely moments we shared as a family. The hot tub was excellent, useable at all times of the day and the great thing is that you see it being checked every morning, so there is no worry about it not being looked after. Crosby Garrett is a rural village, so you should expect that you need to go to a bigger town in order to find shopping. Bigger towns are a 20 minute drive away.

Beautiful cottage set in gorgeous surroundings with the most lovely owner who is super helpful. Cottage has everything you could ever think of needing. It’s not a place for people who want to have a few drinks in the local pub as there isn’t one, but a lovely place to relax and unwind with not a care in the world. Would definitely go back!

Our family have been having cottage breaks for years now, Gill cottage has by far been the best we have stayed in, the cottage its self is beautiful so big and and well laid out, it was immaculate and we even had milk, butter, bread and a bottle of posseco on arrival. Our stay was faultless and the surrounding area is beautiful, couldn’t recommend Gill cottage enough, we will definitely be visiting again. Michael
