This beautifully renovated cottage was once the home of the renowned Cumbrian artist Percy Kelly. You will see engraved in the lintel in the bedroom AK – PK – 1958. The artist lived in Cumbria for more than 50 years and in Glen Cottage for twelve of those. Follow the Kelly Trails which have been formed totally through Kelly’s paintings and drawings and stretch from the door of Glen Cottage in Allonby to St Bees, the start of the famous Coast to Coast Walk.
Glen Cottage itself is a very comfortable, tranquil cottage with views stretching out over the Solway Firth to Scotland in the distance. It has insulated lime render walls inside and outside, as well as underfloor heating in the living room and sitting room making the house very warm and cosy. The sitting room retains a lot of original features including beams complete with hook, as well as a large inglenook fireplace with a wood burner and sandstone flooring, which makes a particularly attractive and a cosy spot to warm up in front of after a long day exploring.
Allonby is a great base for walking, windsurfing, kite surfing, cycling or just relaxing on the beach. Only 200 yards across the road, guests can enjoy an afternoon of sea fishing on Allonby Beach. For those who want to get out and about and explore the area, the Lake District National Park is a short drive away. From Glen Cottage you can also easily explore the delights of the unspoilt Cumbrian Coast. Be sure however, to follow a Percy Kelly Trail! Located between Maryport and Silloth this area has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its long sandy beaches offer great views over the Solway Estuary to the mountains of Southern Scotland gives an added dimension to this Cumbrian hotspot. Within a few hundred yards you have a chippy, a couple of great pubs serving food and local ales, a famous ice-cream shop, why not try the famous ‘Allonby Whopper’ ice cream, people travel for miles to come and try one! There’s also a kid’s playing field with climbing frames and football goals.
For those seeking some more rugged outdoor adventure you’re only a 10-mile drive to the Lake District National Park and 16 miles to your nearest Lake, Bassenthwaite, home to the famous Lakes Distillery offering guided tours and tastings and The Lake District Wildlife Park with over 100 species of exotic animals makes it a fun-filled day out for all ages.
