We recently spent a lovely week in Gran’s cottage. It’s location from the back looks straight over to Lindisfarne, which is beautiful. When we arrived it was such a lovely day we wanted to relax in the back garden. Sadly when we went out the grass was up to our knees, and therefore unable to sit down. We contacted the owner who was very sorry to hear this, but got onto her gardener, who came over the following day to get it sorted. This is the 2nd time we have been here, the kitchen and living room have been refurbished. Very bright and relaxing place to stay.

Overall I'd say we enjoyed our stay at Gran's Cottage. It's situated in a stunning part of the British countryside and there are so many wonderful places to visit nearby. However, there are a few things that could be improved within the property: The view from the back garden is stunning, but as mentioned in another review the grass was too overgrown and full of dog poo to use. We should have phoned the owner and complained during our stay but we are too shy to complain and we shouldn't have to. The grass had missed more than two weeks cutting, possibly over a month it was that long. Also as mentioned in previous reviews, I don't believe the problem with the neighbours has been completely resolved. There was still a lot of shouting and arguing coming through the walls. The worst incident was one morning when they were arguing in the front garden, the man then got into his van and drove away at high speed, wheel spinning the tyres, only to come back 30 seconds later at high speed screeching the brakes and skidding to stop, then more shouting out of the window of his van with the woman shouting back at him. This repeated five or six times over 30 minutes or more. We were starting to think we should phone the police. I know the neighbours are not the owner's responsibility, but it does not make for a relaxing holiday.

The boiler was very smelly to the point it made me cough but despite texting the owner to check whether this was normal I had no response.

We loved our holiday here and would come back. The house looks small from outside but is actually very spacious and was beautifully furnished, well equipped and absolutely spotless. Detchant is a tiny hamlet of just a few houses with no amenities whatsoever within walking distance. This suited us perfectly but might not appeal to everyone. A car is an essential but with a car there is much to see and do within a fifteen mile radius. Although you can see both the A1 and the main railway line from the back of the cottage you cannot hear them, indeed the silence was one of the joys of this holiday. The rear garden is fully enclosed so safe for dogs and there is garden furniture in both front and back gardens.

It was too remote for us. It was said there would be complimentary wood and kindling for the wood burner and there was not, so didn't feel very welcoming. We had problems with TV, which as soon as we rang the owner, he did his best to get someone out to repair the aerial, so we were without TV for two nights. Information book did not contain instructions on appliances, i.e. cooker, TV , washing machine etc. We eventually found these in a kitchen drawer. The location was ok to get to places of interest. Kitchen was lovely.

Comfortable beds, good view of Lindisfarne through kitchen window, well equipped kitchen and good bathroom. A few minor repairs were needed. Handy position for Holy Island.

Cottage was clean and tidy, though a little tired in places. Great views and peace and quite were welcome. Would return without a second thought, great value for money.
