The mill which last operated in the late 1940s had a wooden overshot mill wheel on its east wall powered by water from the River Aran. The mill served as the ’court mill’ for the parish local farmers brought their grain to Great Cantal where it was stored in the Granary until it was milled with the miller retaining some of the flour as payment for the milling. Most of the mill machinery had been removed by the 1980s but one of the bedstones made of French burr stone dating from about 1830 and weighing over a ton was still in place when the present owners already resident in the old farmhouse opposite acquired the Mill and Granary a few years ago. This bedstone was carefully removed and is now on display at Talgarth Mill which is about 30 miles away between Hay on Wye and Brecon. Since 1989 the Granary Mill and Farmhouse have been in separate ownership to the farm. A network of tracks crosses the farm giving easy access to Maelienydd and Little Hill Commons. Overlooking the farm to the north is Beacon Hill Common 5000 acres of open moorland across which runs Glyndwr’s Way a long distance footpath running from Knighton to Machynlleth. All three commons are access land on which there is the right to roam.\nThe River Aran which rises on Beacon Hill and flows down through Great Cantal to join the River Ithon near Penybont and thence the Wye a little north of Builth Wells is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation where a variety of wildlife can be found. The owner has fishing rights for 3½ miles on the River Ithon which is located a 25-minute drive away £10pw licence required. Maelienydd itself a SSSI is a breeding ground for redshank and curlew and Beacon Hill still hosts the rare ring ouzel as well as red grouse. One of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves Tylcau Hill lies about 2 miles from the Granary and is open to visitors all year round. The spa town of Llandrindod Wells is 15 miles. Shop 8 miles pub and restaurant 4½ miles. \n " https://img.chooseacottage.co.uk/Property/921/840/921011.jpg OX8

We greatly enjoyed our week at the Great Cantal Granary. It is remote, in its own secret valley - hence the necessarily low score on local amenities - there aren't any, basically, you have to go further afield. But we knew this beforehand so were pre-armed. Similarly the place is somewhat basic, put together in DIY fashion but this and the location are reflected in the price which is very reasonable. Our hosts live in the nearby old farmhouse and were charming and helpful. WiFi just about works, but only just. We enjoyed driving through the ford (often also involving opening a farm gate) to get to the place. Be aware that there is a modern working farm as well as the old buildings so depending on the season you will get tractors etc going to and fro, barking (but friendly) dogs etc. We used the place as a centre for walking and expeditions further afield - there are various old green tracks passing through. You can walk up the hill and along the ridge, descending to Llanbister Road station where you can hail a train on the Heart of Wales line - few trains run, so make sure you know the timings. Many nice market towns and former spas dotted around the countryside, and places such as the Elan Valley with its several dams. Note re local paths - take a good map and compass and good walking clothing (it can get very wet on occasion). Phone coverage is patchy as you'd expect. Footpaths in the area are seldom waymarked and relatively little used (tiny population) so can be hard to follow. But well worth it - we had some fine walks. Good wildlife such as red kites, buzzards, owls, bats. Summary: if it's a relatively basic well-priced rural retreat you're after, this is a good one, in beautiful countryside. Just don't expect luxury - we didn't and were happy.
