Gwbert-on-Sea is a small quiet hamlet on the eastern shore of the mouth of the Teifi Estuary just a couple of miles outside Cardigan. The settlement takes its name from a wandering saint. St Gwbert is said to have landed here and sheltered in a cave. The shoreline is marked by rugged cliffs and small shingle bays with large stretches of sandbank exposed at low tide and the area gives superb views over a diverse and scenic landscape. The ancient oak woodland of the Teifi Valley the tidal marshes of the estuary and the boundary of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park can all be appreciated from here. The 18-hole golf course the home of Cardigan Golf Club also offers fine views of the estuary and sea and from the headland you can look across to Cardigan Island. The mud and sand flats of the estuary attracts a great variety of birds. In the autumn such waders as the redshank oystercatcher and curlew can be seen feeding here along with several species of migrating duck. The headland of Craig y Gwbert is the site of an Iron Age Fort. Pieces of pottery have also been found near Gwbert and are now on display in Cardigan museum. We rented the house for a relaxing Easter weekend with friends. Gwbert is absolutely beautiful, there’s not a lot there but the views and walks are quite something. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed but this is not a shining review of the house as I do feel it was overpriced and underwhelming as a holiday rental. There are a couple of hotels close by with varying menus offer a break from cooking. One of which is Gwbert hotel where you check in to get the keys to the house. We had no phone signal at all so you do feel a bit cut off from the world. We had a nightmare with a Tesco delivery which ended up not arriving, the hotel were particularly unhelpful with this refusing to call the driver to give directions as they were ‘busy serving’ which, when we went down there clearly meant chatting with their mates. They eventually let us borrow their phone but it was too late by that point so our delivery did not arrive. There is a Tesco and Aldi within a 5 minute drive so we solved the problem the next morning. The house is nice but you are definitely paying for the location, it’s not 5 star in any other way in fact I would rate it 3 star. It needs a deep clean, it’s not dirty but it’s far from sparkly. It is also really lacking that cosy feel as everything in the house feels quite clinical. The stairs were so creaky there was no chance of a lie in. The outside area consists of the hot tub, picnic bench and a couple of chairs. Nice enough but just not comfortable or relaxing and very much overlooked by the other houses next door and behind. We could hear everything going on in the other houses. They provide just enough but unlike other holiday rentals I’ve stayed in there’s no added extra touches such as welcome packs with milk and biscuits etc. It’s advertised as providing towels but they are the smallest of towels, be sure to take your own. There were a few toilet rolls but not enough for anymore than 1 day, 1 bin bag, 5 dishwasher tablets no cloths/kitchen roll etc. Knives were poor quality and we struggled to cut anything, also the oven was very slow and the fridge ice machine was broken. All rooms were very basic. It feels like the upstairs has been recently refurbished and the double room is nicely laid out with en-suite but the floorboards were weak and the roof was all cracking above the shower. These are all examples of what is missing/needed but I must reiterate that the house is lovely and has potential to be great. I would recommend this house for families in the summer but I would also say that there are nicer more reasonable properties in the area that I would probably choose over this one if I had the chance again.

Booked the cottage as a weekend away with family and friends. Place was clean and plenty of rooms to choose from. Pity weather wasnt with us, so we could of enjoyed the area a bit more. Only concern was the stair gate. As we had a few toddlers, it wasnt fit for purpose and wasnt fitted on our arrival either. Other than that, great place, great views.
