    > ‘‘...imbued with noble history...set in a dramatic and varied landscape...’’

Take a beautiful Peak District National Park setting, just 3½ miles from Bakewell, add a historic hall (first recorded in the Domesday Book), and an ancient cluster of listed buildings converted to form superb holiday cottage accommodation....and the result is the captivating blend that is Harthill Hall. Nestling in 14 acres of grounds on an upland called Priest’s Hill with excellent walking available from the doorstep, the properties have the use of an extensive range of leisure facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium and treatment rooms. Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.

It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Derbyshire’s bustling market towns, villages, hills, dales and rivers offer majestic scenery, and a rich variety of customs. Boasting a varied and beautiful landscape, they offer a blend of heritage, history and family attractions. The beautiful market town of Bakewell (3½ miles) is situated on the River Wye, crossed by a 13th-century five-arched bridge which has coffee shops and restaurants. Within easy reach are Matlock, Hall Leys Park, Chesterfield, Alfreton and Buxton. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Games room with free wireless internet connection (1gb per day per device). Golf and horse riding are available within 5 miles. Shop 3½ miles, pub 1 mile.

The site was lovely but the upstairs accommodation we had had a very musty smell as we entered through the front door . While it was well equipped, the accommodation was very tired and definitely needs a facelift especially in the bathroom and bedrooms. The lack of meeting anyone pertaining to the property throughout our stay and the plethora of rather impolite orders and instructions with consequences of rule breaking posted both on notice board in the living room and in the information book felt very unwelcoming. The swimming pool was very nice but our accommodation was above it and the smell of chemicals from the pool was quite strong. Overall the accommodation was fine but that's about it.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days at manners cottage. The location is superb and the site is really well maintained and organised. I think the only little negative comments about this property is that it does have a light stale smell combined with the pool chlorine which is underneath the property.

Booked The Manners at Harthill Hall as seemed a good location / was dog friendly and the bonus of a pool / games room. The booking was frustrating as online only accepts 2 nights and we wanted 3 so had to wait 3 days for a response. The accommodation is extremely tired - the furniture is really uncomfortable esp after a long day walking and not really space for the 4 of us. The bathroom smelt awful of damp (we wondered why all the windows were open when we arrived.....) and the tepid bath water was disappointing. The toilet flush hardly worked and the master bedroom had condensation dripping down walls making anything at the bottom damp over night. All the windows had black around them - and rotten woodwork - which just made the whole place feel even more grubby. The lighting throughout was dim at best - especially in the dining area and kitchen / lounge - could not read the map etc. Electrics felt ad hoc - extension cables all over. The pool area is tired too - pool itself was small and cold - ok for 30 mins or so for the children. All the towels were thin and cheap feeling. The positives - lovely welcome fizz and Bakewell tarts - doggy treats too - the games room was fun if cold and the beds were as comfy as any we have slept in.The wifi worked well and was fast - So in short we went to bed early to be comfortable and used our laptop to watch a film. Lucky for us we only needed a base as had four days of walking and running planned - but if we had come for the accommodation / relax / comfort it would have been a disaster. It felt like a money spinner rather than a passion - we never met anyone / owner or manager the whole time.

Good accommodation. Very comfy beds. Sofa quite firm. Bathroom adequate for our needs. Pool was good but a little bit cold for young children. The location is beautiful. As it is part of a few cottages there can be lots of people. We were a young family with a baby and the large house in front of the playground had a hen party staying but they did not disrupt our holiday.
