    This was our 3rd stay at the cottage so we knew what to expect, a comfortable unfussy cottage for 4 in a nice village location. I have previously rated the cottage higher than 5 but this time there were a number of disappointing issues as follows: 1. The cottage was cold on arrival, hadn’t been occupied for several weeks previously and should have been warmed up properly 2. The front door lock kept dead-locking itself meaning you couldn’t open it from the inside. 3. The back door and door frame were swollen due to cold/damp and took a Herculean effort to open or close. A local carpenter came to look and advised keeping the heating on to try and evaporate the moisture in the wood. 4. There was virtually no toilet roll (fortunately we had bought some). No kitchen towel, and we had to replace washing up liquid. These are small things but niggles that could be avoided for the sake of a few pounds. There was a bottle of Prosecco waiting on arrival which was a nice touch but, at the relatively high price for the week (Xmas), this didn’t feel like good value for money for the reasons given above.

    The cottage is in a great location for walks along the River Tweed, only 5 minutes walk down to the river. The river path is flat with benches to sit down on every so often. The garden is enclosed which is good for dogs. The cottage itself could do with a good clean we did clean cupboards pans and cutlery but they are so old it did not make any difference it is a bit run down. They could do with replacing the towels as well, they were like sandpaper. Berwick is not very far a way where you will find all supermarkets. There are a few places of interest close by. Northumberland is a nice place to visit.

    We had a good week in September sunshine. The walks along the Tweed, watching the salmon fly-fishers, and visits to the castle were lovely. The garden is great for the dog - completely enclosed, proof against even a canine high jumper. The cottage has everything we need, and the big double bed has a good mattress (rare in holidays cots) so even my husband slept well. The shower cubicle is a bit of a tight fit. The only disappointments were local hostelries. The Mason's Arms produced indifferent food, the Black Bull at Etal was having an off day (agency chef in) and the food was inedible, but we weren't asked to pay for it. Probably better to go into Berwick, which we've always enjoyed.
