Gilcrux is an ideal location for touring the highlights of Northern England. Both the western and northern lakes are close by with Bassenthwaite, 6 miles, and Buttermere, 12 miles. The traditional market town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, and the bustling lakeside town of Keswick both have a wide selection of attractions, and are within a 20-minute drive. Birdwatching and coastal walking can be enjoyed along the Solway, 4 miles. The city of Carlisle, 15 miles, with castle and excellent museum is a good starting point for discovering the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, with its interesting exhibition and the history of the Border Reivers from nearby Scotland. The Northumberland National Park, Eden Valley and the North Pennines are all within a scenic drive. Shops 3 miles, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
