No smoking. \n\n Holmefield Cottage is a beautiful semi-detached holiday cottage set in the picturesque Peak District National Park mid-way between Bakewell and Matlock with its sister cottage Holmefield Coach House UK4039. These properties are only a 5-minute drive from Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall with uninterrupted views over the Derwent Valley and the historic Peak Rail steam trains. \nThe popular Peak District town of Matlock together with its neighbour Matlock Bath have been attracting visitors to the area since the spa was developed in the late 17th century. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the River Derwent they both offer a range of shops pubs and restaurants as well as a host of attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham - a great place for all the family with show caves a nature trail water gardens and the Owl Maze. South of the town is the start of the High Peak Cycle Trail whilst a short drive away is the National Tramway Museum at Crich. To the north is Chatsworth House and Park along with the market town of Bakewell. These properties are ideally placed for exploring this beautiful region both the rugged Dark Peak and the softer limestone White Peak are within easy reach from Bakewell whilst the theme park Alton Towers is only a short drive away. These wonderful Derbyshire homes have the added benefit of a delightful patio area overlooking wonderful views – an ideal place to spend time over breakfast as you plan your days ahead or a glass of wine after a long day spent exploring.     The host was very responsive and his communication was very good, we had a couple of issues which we felt he might help us with and he returned our calls quickly and did his best to rectify our concerns. As we value peace and quiet when we book holiday lets, I made a real error with Holmefield Cottage, in that I didn’t do my research- mea culpa. Because we were emerging from Covid-19 restrictions and self-catering accommodation was being booked up quickly, I only looked at the reviews and the photos. Make no mistake, the A6 runs within a metre of the back wall of this cottage and for us, that was a real issue. Yes, the roads are currently busier than normal due to an increase in staycations but the traffic noise was continuous and loud, inside and out. Secondly, one of the bedrooms (ours) forms a flying freehold over the cottage next door, Holmefield Coachhouse, the occupants of that cottage had booked a long term let and the tenants changed daily. On the first night, music and TV programmes were being played loudly right through the night and it made our first night very broken. Again, the host did speak to our neighbours but the respectful quiet lasted two nights and I had to speak to each new set of residents as they arrived on a daily basis. The promotional photographs show a blue picnic table on a shingle terrace with a beautiful view over the Derwent valley; yes, the view is to die for but the ‘terrace’ does, in the words of the host, “double as a parking area”. My photograph shows the reality we were left with; not exactly as portrayed. The location is very convenient, take away food, restaurants and pubs are within easy walking distance and supermarkets a short drive away. We were in the area to enjoy long walks and days of fly fishing on the Derwent, Wye and on Press Manor lakes and all are within easy reach. The cottage has been recently redecorated and each room is well presented. Showers and baths work well, were clean and there is plenty of hot water. In these times of a global pandemic, it is essential that self-catering units are deep cleaned between guests and although the cottage was generally clean, there were some items in the kitchen that were not clean, surfaces beneath the kitchen cupboards were not cleaned adequately, some cobwebs were present in the window recess and some items of cutlery and china are not entirely clean. Some kitchen items need replacing ( for example, a frying pan has a handle that is falling off and has clearly seen better days) and the kitchen equipment was very basic; none of the knives were sharp, there was no bread knife or spatula. The parking area was plenty big enough for two families using the cottages but the number of individuals using the Coachhouse next door meant that the spaces were filled on most days and on our last two days a large white van was parked right on the ‘terrace’, obscuring our view. The WiFi is served by a signal booster from next door which makes using some software difficult or impossible. This includes the FireStick TV facility which wouldn’t work without buffering every few minutes (digital TV worked ok) and also, using Zoom for meetings was hit and miss; sometimes ok, sometimes not. Overall, I thought that this holiday let was overpriced, not because of the quality of the building but because of the proximity of the A6 (many reviewers have not found this a problem but we did), the nature of the usage of the adjacent cottage and the quality and range of the kitchen utensils. It’s best virtue is the beautiful view at the rear of the cottage and the fact that it has recently been redecorated.

    The cottage was well equipped and clean. Lovely views over valley to Peak Steam railway and close to footpath. Enclosed dog exercising area was bonus, only because close to main road. Good location to travel into Matlock and Bakewell.

    A beautiful well appointed cottage ( well, small house ) lovely bedrooms and all possible amenities fantastic views and for me personally a bonus of a steam railway at the bottom of the garden ( run by peak rail it`s not obtrusive and only runs a few times a day ). Lots of interesting places to visit within easy reach. Would stay again and strongly reccomend.
