Perfect for guests wanting to visit friends and family at Durham University or an ideal base for prospective students wanting to explore the campuses and facilities or attend graduation ceremonies. John Lively Cottage is just over a 10-minute drive away from the many university buildings and halls of residence.\n\nThe property is nestled away overlooking the Grade I listed Norman church of St Helen situated in Church Kelloe. The church is famous for a Norman cross dedicated to St Helen and for a tablet commemorating the birth of Elizabeth Barrett Browning at nearby Coxhoe Hall in 1806. John Lively Cottage dates back to before the 1600’s and has plenty of historic connections. This detached cottage adjacent to the owners home was once the original vicarage for the church and maintains many of its original features yet after a recent renovation by the current owners there are ample modern comforts to enjoy alongside the historic features. Beautifully renovated to a good standard guests will find a large open plan living dining and kitchen area on the ground floor. With good quality fixtures and fittings views across to the church and a fantastic wood burner guests will find themselves cosy and warm at any time of year. On the first floor there is a family bathroom a double bedroom with kingsize bed and also a twin bedroom which have been decorated and furnished to a good standard. The lawned garden wraps around the cottage and offers peace and tranquillity after a long day visiting one of the many attractions in the area.\n\nDurham city is one of the most historic cities in England and offers guests a variety of attractions to visit and explore. The city has recently been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site accolade and Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle are definitely worth a visit. There is also the Gala Theatre and Millenium Square located in the centre of the city making this the perfect spot for guests wanting to enjoy a theatre trip as part of their break. Packed with restaurants bistros cafés and bars Durham is a thriving city with plenty of entertainment for guests at all time of the year. Guests have the opportunity to enjoy the bi-annual Lumiere Festival annual book week jazz festival arts festival miners gala and many more free attractions as well as the weekly farmers market and pavement artists that line the streets and market place. Should guests wish to enjoy a little retail therapy then they will find some beautiful boutiques along with many high street names and designer shops too. Beach 11½ miles. Shop pub and restaurant ½ mile. \n " https://img.chooseacottage.co.uk/Property/144/840/1442862.jpg UKC3045

We really enjoyed our stay here. Very comfortable cottage with nice views of the church. Good access to Durham and surrounding area. Friendly hosts. Very much enjoyed the welcome goodies. Could do with a new sofa and WiFi but was quite nice to get away from WiFi too 😁

Lovely small barn recently converted into a very welcoming cottage. Excellent high quality fixtures and fittings. Very peaceful country surroundings and beautiful village church. Only 15 minutes from Durham centre and perfect for our Christmas markets expedition. A lovely place to get the dog out for a long walk and then back to a roaring log fire. Highly recommended.

The cottage is in need of a new sofa and chairs as both chairs were uncomfortable and a chaise longe is not a comfortable alternative for a sofa. Whilst WiFi is not a must for everybody it would certainly make it more appealing. The tv and telephone reception (3 different networks) were very poor although the quality of the equipment was very good. Overall a lovely cottage and enjoyable stay. Hopefully these comments are seen as helpful rather than critical. The Gant’s.
