• About Kames Beach House

Relax in glorious surroundings in this luxurious holiday home, nestled peacefully on the shores of Loch Melfort, with spectacular sea views and abundant wildlife.

This beautiful, detached, single-storey holiday home lies in a magnificent position with the shores of Loch Melfort at the foot of the garden. Surrounded by stunning scenery, rugged glens and sea lochs, this is a truly wonderful base for exploring the west coast of Scotland.
From the shore of the loch, kayaks can be launched or nearby Craobh Marina and Kilmelford Yacht Haven offer moorings for larger boats. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife and from the house you may well spot cormorants, eider ducks, sea eagles, seals or even the occasional otter! The peaceful village of Kilmelford boasts a small shop, post office, café/takeaway and a hotel with a public bar. A short drive north is the bustling, harbour town of Oban which has a good variety of shops, leisure centre, cinema, distillery, railway station and a choice of excellent seafood restaurants. There are regular ferries from Oban to the Inner Hebrides, including Mull, Iona, Staffa and Tiree, offering the opportunity to see porpoise, dolphins, minke whales, basking sharks, golden eagles and puffins.
Head south to explore the Crinan Canal and meander or cycle along the towpaths, or spend a day in Inveraray visiting the romantic Inveraray Castle and experiencing the Inveraray Jail living museum. Kilmartin is rich in archaeological and historical remains of Neolithic and early Bronze Age monuments, standing stones and burial cairns. The picturesque Kintyre Peninsula is popular for its white sandy beaches and rugged coastline. Enjoy a round of golf at Machrihanish, one of the finest links golf courses in Great Britain. From Claonaig, a short ferry crossing will take you to the Isle of Arran where you can climb Goat Fell, or the ferry from Kennacraig sails to Islay and Jura, where you can sample their famous whiskies! Or take the ferry from Oban to the magical Island of Colonsay where you can stroll along the glorious golden sandy beach at Kiloran Bay, fringed by machair dunes on one side and crashing Atlantic breakers on the other, 27 miles.
The surrounding area has many famous ruined castles, museums and beautiful gardens to explore or for the less energetic, why not sit and relax in the garden and watch the spectacular sunsets over the loch. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

We had the most fantastic week at Kames Beach House. The weather was wonderful and the house was so idyllic it was difficult to leave. It is very comfortable, the views are to die for, access to the water for kayaking was great. We couldn’t have wanted more. Shelagh and Stuart were very welcoming and the thought they have put into making this holiday home special has really paid off. One of our best holidays ever!

We had the most fabulous stay at Kames Beach House. It was so clean, warm and beautifully decorated. We felt immediately uplifted when we arrived and could not get over the stunning view from pretty much all of the windows. Shelagh & Stuart had though of everything and we very much appreciated the little goodies and personal note left for our stay. It is so well located, within easy distance to Oban and jumping on a ferry was so easy to enable us to visit so many islands. We spotted eagles, seals, otters, red squirrels, puffins and the list goes on. If you get the chance to look around their fish farm, do! It was so informative and the girls very much enjoyed learning about fish farming. We shall definitely be back and can't wait to sit out on the deck and admire the Loch views and take in the wildlife! Thank you!

We’ve had the most glorious family holiday together in Kames Beach House and can’t remember ever being so sad before to leave a holiday cottage. We went with our two sons and their wives and we all loved it. The owners have lovingly renovated a tired old bungalow into a modern yet homely and stylish home in the most stunning position on loch Melfort. They are the perfect hosts, really informative and helpful before we arrived and then so welcoming but not intrusive when we were there. We especially loved having our own rocky beach and were thrilled to see an otter on a few evenings after some patient stalking! The sunsets were breathtaking and so varied each day. The weather was very kind to us and the midges were only just starting to appear in the evenings - we couldn’t keep our eyes off the stunning views from each window not just the loch view but from every aspect. The house was immaculately clean not just normal clean and the kitchen was so well stocked we ate at home every day - even having freshly cooked langoustines and mussels one day from the fishmonger in Oban. We also had freshly made scones on some mornings and a couple of barbecues. A large Tesco home delivery came on our arrival - that was a vital bit of planning because the house is 30 minutes away from a decent supermarket - there was plenty of cupboard space to put everything away. There is so much to do in the area but we didn’t really want to leave the house! We enjoyed the Oban distillery tour and nearby Arduaine garden was so pretty with rhododendrons and bluebells at this time in May. A trip to Inveraray castle was magical But we will have to return again for more sightseeing. Thank you for the memories We will be back to make some more!!

Having stayed in many self catering cottages around the west coast of Scotland I would highly recommend this property. Everything was immaculate and we couldn't fault it. We had a very good time and the weather wasn't too bad. The views from the property was amazing and we got some good photos of the sunsets.

Just back from a wonderful Christmas break at Kames Beach House. It’s hard for the photographs to do it justice; it’s much larger than expected and very well appointed, making it a perfect home from home. The views are simply stunning. From the most amazingly delicious mince pies to the beautifully decorated Christmas tree and fresh smoked trout delivered to our door, everything was absolutely perfect. We did a mix of travelling around the region and pj days, taking in the ever changing view. We would thoroughly recommend Kames Beach House to anyone looking for that special getaway. Just don’t tell others as we want to keep it our special secret! Downside? Having to leave. Thank you Shelagh and Stuart for sharing your lovely home and for your kind hospitality.

Kames Beach House is easily the most comfortable and luxurious cottage we have stayed in. The owners really have left no stone unturned in providing everything necessary for a truly relaxing holiday, and they made us very welcome. The house was spotless and the equipment/furnishings were outstanding - really a home away from home. The pictures on the website accurately portray the standard of the property and the surroundings but the reality is even better! The view of the loch (and the ability to swim/paddle in it) will stay with us for a long time.
