Kate’s Croft is a traditional detached stone cottage and barn conversion. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Moray Firth, it enjoys superb uninterrupted views across the Sutherland hills to the sea. Originally Kate’s Croft comprised a small, two-roomed croft house and barn. The cottage has been renovated by the current owner and now provides delightful accommodation that oozes rustic charm in a quiet and peaceful setting. It is situated on a small no-through lane that leads directly onto the open hillside. Just 1½ miles from the A9 and the renowned North Coast 500 route, it is easily accessible too. Wildlife is abundant in the immediate area and deer, golden eagles, otters, dolphins and seals are seen locally. The large kitchen/dining room in the converted barn area is simply stunning. With a farmhouse kitchen table, wood burner and bright, contemporary kitchen units with large range cooker, it makes a wonderful hub for the whole family to gather around. It is also extremely well-equipped. There are two separate living rooms, one with a large wood-burner, making this an ideal cottage for a two-family holiday or larger groups. The main bedroom is accessed via its own separate staircase. Located in the old hay loft and built into the hillside, the owner has cleverly added French doors which open onto a decking area with patio table and chairs where you can enjoy the morning sun, or if you are lucky, an amazing view of the Northern Lights. At the other end of the cottage a second staircase leads up to another double bedroom, a twin room and a single room. All enjoy the same wonderful sea views. There is a small enclosed garden with a picnic bench. From here, steps lead up to a small decked area behind the house which can also be accessed from the master bedroom.
Situated in the pretty hamlet of Gartymore, it is just over a mile to the attractive coastal fishing village of Helmsdale. Here there is a thriving small harbour and a good selection of small local shops and restaurants as well as a fascinating, award-winning museum detailing the area’s rich and varied past. There is a 9-hole golf course in the village and other championship golf courses at nearby Brora and Dornoch. The local shoreline is renowned for its fossils, which are regularly found along this particular stretch of coast. This region is also known for its unspoilt beaches, wild and rugged coastline, and traditional villages. Travel north to visit the Castle of Mey, John O’ Groats and the Orkney Isles. Golf, fishing, cycling, hill-walking, surfing, kayaking and pony trekking are all local pastimes. Beach 1 mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 1¾ mile.

Fantastic cottage and location. Very well equipped in the kitchen. Only negative was the sofa in the main lounge being very uncomfortable and not fit for purpose.

Place was nice and clean and bedding and linen brilliant. Swings and things overgrown and unuseable. Sofa in tv room a real let down and one or two chairs in kitchen a bit worn. But overall a pleasant stay with wonderfull views . Lots of midges but thats life. A pleasant garden gor dogs and we had a resident toad which baffled them.

Superb croft, very tidy and comfortable, although our bed was a bit too firm for us. The location is beautiful, peaceful and quiet. The highlands in general are breathtaking. It is a place where you really need a car unless you’re quite fit and active but we as a family cannot recommend Kate’s Croft highly enough, it is a wonderful place to stay and provides an ideal base from which to explore the East Highlands. We will definitely be back!

A pleasant cottage but not one for anyone with an issue getting about. It is located on an extremely steep hill which means a difficult climb when you go out for a walk with the dog. The stairs going up to the bedroom leading off the kitchen has quite a tight turn at the top. The cottage has all the utensils you could possibly need for cooking and the kitchen, snug and sitting rooms all have wood burning fires. The sitting room has the TV in it but it is impossible to relax and watch it due to the condition of the only settee in it. The cushions gave up the ghost a long time ago and the settee should be sent to the local dump. The garden is enclosed which is ideal for a dog or small children however there’s a lot of wooden boards and other rubbish proped against the side of the cottage which children could hurt themselves with. There is a decking area at the rear of the cottage but the first step of the staircase has rotted through throwing doubt as to the condition of the rest. The master bedroom has French doors leading out to this decking area but we couldn’t find a key to them so they would be useless as a means of escape if a fire broke out cutting of the escape to the kitchen. This is the 9th time we’ve rented a cottage in the highland area so we’re able to compare to previous rentals. Summing up Kate’s Croft is a clean cottage that needs a bit of clearing up and a bit of TLC to the outside plus that settee definitely needs replaced.
