Liftingstane Dairy Cottage (ref UK5878) is an attractive and beautifully presented barn conversion adjoining Liftingstane Cottage.

Liftingstane Farm is set in a rural location in the mid-section of the beautiful Nith Valley in Dumfries-shire, near to the small village of Closeburn and 4 miles from Thornhill. There is a choice of activities locally to suit all ages including walking, cycling, golfing, fishing and birdwatching. Enjoy a round of golf at the local 18-hole course in Thornhill, or if fishing is your thing, the River Nith provides numerous areas to fish for salmon and trout (licence required). Drumlanrigg Castle and Gardens, Ellisland (once home to Robert Burns), Charles Jenck’s Garden of Cosmic Speculation and world class mountain biking routes, the 7 Stanes, are all on your doorstep. 20 minutes south is the town of Dumfries with lots to keep the whole family entertained with farm parks, swimming, ice-skating, art centres and shopping.

According to local historical records Liftingstane Farm had a ’lifting stane’ (lifting stone) on the property up until about 200 years ago, hence how the farm got its name. Unfortunately, no one knows what happened to it. The challenge of the Lifting Stane is to lift it, proving an individual’s strength. Lifting Stanes are common throughout Scotland, Wales and Cumbria, and recently stones have been incorporated into the World’s Strongest Man competitions.

Further afield, take a trip to the Galloway Forest Park, one of the darkest places in the UK, in fact the UK’s first Dark Sky Park. A visit to this area of south west Scotland would not be complete without a day trip to the rugged coastline and seaside, with visits to the quaint villages and towns such as Kippford, Sandyhills, Southerness and Kirkcudbright.

This is a central base for day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stranraer or Carlisle which are all within a 1½ hour drive. If you fancy a stress-free day, why not just relax in the peace and quiet at the farmhouse. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

Liftingstane Dairy Cottage can be booked together with Liftingstane Cottage (ref UK5232) and Liftingstane Farmhouse (ref UK10452) to accommodate up to 17 guests.

The Dairy Cottage was fantastic the views and surroundings were exceptional the place was clean everything you need was thought off even down to sewing kit, plasters, even treats and a bed for your dog, also you had WFI and logs for the wood burner at no extra chart, the bedrooms were spacious with plenty of room bathrooms nice size shower in both bathrooms plus a roll top bath in one, washer an dryer, all furniture an fittings were of good quality the beds were really comfortable that we over slept quiet often in the week. Ali An Jock were great an very friendly an called in to make sure everything was ok. Lots of places to visit and lovely walks an surroundings We will definitely be returning in the future.

Spent a great week at Dairy cottage, lovely owners and fabulous cottage - cosy, spotlessly clean and equipped to a high standard. Family of four and our two JRT’s Kipper and Chip had a great week and we were made very welcome by all the locals. Liftingstane is well situated for daily excursions and we made it to a beach every day. Highly recommend these cottages 👍

Really lovely holiday cottage. Ali and Jock have thought of everything. Very welcoming and generous hosts. Some cottages dont leave you anything to start you off but this cottage is really well equipped. The bathrooms are lovely, best shower I've ever had!! The area is beautiful, with lots of wildlife and handsome livestock. The dairy herd down the road are gorgeous. We visited the red kite feeding centre and found the wild goat herd. Drumlanrig castle down the road is a must. Filled a whole day there easily with lovely walks in the woodland and a tour of the castle. We will definitely come back, and bring our dogs next time!!!

Our holiday in Lindisfarne Cottage was just a dream (May 2019). Such a lovely and remote location (with good mobile reception and WiFi though). Ali and Jock are lovely hosts and the cottage itself has everything you can think of and it is quite luxurious. It was our base location for lovely trips around Galloway Forest Park which has so much to offer. Our stay there was fantastic and we definitely will be back there again. We didn't want to leave - it was truly brilliant.

This is a most beautiful cottage with decor and fittings to the highest standard possible, every single thing you think you need is there even down to an ice cream scoop! Also very dog friendly with all their needs catered for too - treats, poo bags etc. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful and there are many local places to visit within easy reach. Ali and Jock were the best hosts ever and the welcome we got was second to none- we will always be friends and we will certainly return - without a doubt it was the best cottage we have ever stayed in and we’ve been to many over the years - go there folks you won’t regret it !
