Grade II* listed cottages in the Lake District National Park on the edge of the Lowther Castle Estate. These delightful cottages built in the 1770s are situated in a conservation village designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Lowther model village was said to have been built in order to move the original village and thus improve the view from Lowther Castle. A collection of pretty sandstone cottages set around lawned courtyards, the cottages have listed status and the charm and character of these historic properties is retained and evident today. A visitor attraction in itself, the Lowther Estate offers guests a wealth of experiences - Lowther Castle with its stunning Gothic profile, the extensive gardens and picturesque grounds running down to the River Lowther. Annual events include The Lowther Show held every August, a family orientated traditional country fair, and Kendal Calling, an annual music festival held every July with hundreds of bands entertaining a capacity crowd of 26,000 music lovers.
Both cottages, 18 Lowther Village (UKC1920) and 19 Lowther Village (UKC1921) have been renovated throughout to offer a good standard of accommodation and the careful nature of the work has been sympathetic to the character of the properties. Oak flooring and doors, beamed pitched ceilings in the bedrooms and a careful choice of internal colour schemes complement the heritage of these charming cottages. Bathroom facilities with robes provided for adult guests, well-equipped contemporary kitchens and super kingsize zip and link beds are all presented to guests with care and attention to detail. Both cottages offer private outdoor patio areas for a relaxing end of the day glass of wine after a days exploring. Cyclists keen to take advantage of the fabulous routes in the area will appreciate the sandstone sheds providing bike storage facilities.
A short distance from the pretty village of Askham, Lowther village is ideally situated to head towards Ullswater and Keswick and enjoy the delights of the Northern Lakes. Alternatively, the beautiful Eden Valley is on the doorstep for walks, breathtaking scenery and villages offering Cumbrian hospitality at its finest, with the market town of Penrith 4 miles away. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.
These properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 8 guests.

What would have been a comfortable holiday in a well appointed cottage in quiet surroundings was spoilt by a cottage that was not adequately cleaned. For example, human hairs behind bathroom and toilet doors showed only a cursory vacuum. Bathroom sink overflow was covered in black slime, this wasn't permanent as we were able to rinse it off so sink hadn't been properly cleaned in a while. Muddy marks on walls. Dog hairs on floors and stairs. Showers didn't drain sufficiently indicating that the traps likely need cleaning (one shower tray overflowed when the shower was turned on too fast). Toilets hadn't been cleaned with limescale remover in a while (if ever) and had thick black marks. This is obviously an on-going issue as there were a number of comments on the poor cleaning in the visitors book. Not what I'd expect for a 4 star rated cottage.

Cottage is quaint in a lovely quiet location. Lovely area for walking the dogs and visiting Lowther castle and travelling to other parts of the Lake District. The bed is so big and comfortable. Our family had a lovely weeks break.

Lovely cottage, very clean. Great location. Parking for 2 cars but the parking outside of the cottage is for next door which isn't very clear until you see the parking plan in the cottage.

The cottage itself is in an excellent location and Lowther itself is a pleasant village. The castle is just down the road and is well worth a visit. The period cottage is picturesque and cosy. The beds are also very soft, providing some of the most comfortable nights sleeps we have had. We decided to take the risk of booking accommodation that accepted pets and being non-dog owners, I have to admit that my wife and I would often get the smell of 'dog', especially in the living room, however this seemed to fade as the week progressed. We took our daughter with us who is a toddler, occasionally after sitting on the sofa she would appear with dog hairs attached to her. Perhaps a stronger hoover might do the trick. The cottage itself is not equipped for toddlers with no high chair etc however this was not a major problem. There was a clear issue with parking at the cottage. The cottage guide and the website instructions give conflicting instructions on where to park. One says park to the right next to 18 the other opposite on the gravel track. This did prove a frustration at times as I often couldn't park directly outside 18 as it run the risk of blocking number 19 who readily parked directly outside all week. I know the owner has commented on this and will be sure to do again! We did however have a great time in Lowther and definitely plan to re-visit soon.

The cottage is lovely and ideal location for us. The kitchen could do with a few more glasses and pint jugs. There is an issue with Car Parking as both numbers 18 and 19 are told to park in front of the house which means one car can be blocked in. Information book states on part of the track which is used as a shortcut by locals.

Excellent cottage, comfortable and well equipped. Enjoyed our stay. The cottage was cosy, great tv, lovely wood burner. Nice to have a dishwasher, washing machine. Huge comfy beds. There was a problem with the shower in the main bathroom as it didn’t seem to work. The estate was lovely, loved Askham, Lowther Castle. Unfortunately the castle didn’t have facilities for disabled guests so we couldn’t visit the castle.

We had a great time. Took a teenager and a dog. Cottage perfect for a family or couples. We loved Lowther Castle and hired bikes to ride around the estate. Gardens there and cafe were good too, and the dog was welcome in both on a lead. Woke to snow on the second day, but the cottage was warm and cosy, and we managed to get out and enjoyed the day. Would love to come back sometime. Thanks also for the wine and treats which we indulged in. TV had access to films which we enjoyed too. Many thanks.

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location everything you needed for a comfortable relaxing stay. Would be nice to have a clock somewhere to keep time with and grab rails would be useful in the shower for those not so steady on their feet but otherwise very comfortable .clean and well equiped, Would go back again.

Absolutely gorgeous cottage. The beds are so comfortable it was really clean, it smelled lovely. Everything we could want was there and provided for, along with a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine, along with a carton of milk in the fridge. The neighbourhood was friendly and location was fantastic - what an amazing castle too!!! We will most definitely be coming back with family - most likely booking number 19 too. Thank you for an amazing stay!

Beautifully decorated and comfy cottage in central area. Only negatives would be could do with foil in the kitchen to cook bacon on trays with and dog hairs were on the skirting boards- however we didn’t have dogs so maybe we shouldn’t have chosen a dog friendly house. Overall a beautiful house to relax and explore local area. Thank you.

Beautiful cottage, wonderful showers and comfortable beds would stay here again. Only critism is that a workman called at approximately 9am during our stay to fix the boiler because it had a leak, we asked the workman how long would he need to be because we were on holiday and his reply was quite abrupt stating that he would be as long as needed, we reiterated to him again that we were on holiday in the cottage and that it may be better to call when no guests were using the cottage as it restricts them to staying in.
