Manystones Barn is ideally placed for South Derbyshire. Matlock is 15 minutes away, Bakewell and Ashbourne about 20 minutes. There are wonderful views to the south from the cottage windows. To the east is Carsington Wind farm which is less attractive, but there is no noise intrusion. The only downside to the cottage is the fact the barn is immediately adjacent to the road, and the road noise travels straight through the walls. Unfortunately, it isn't exactly a quiet road. As perhaps you'd expect in South Derbyshire there are still active quarries and stone processing plants in the area. There are two stone processing units on Manystones Lane- one of which is in sight of the Cottage, about half a mile away, and at least 3 active quarries within a couple of miles. There isn't any noise disturbance from any of them, and apart from the floodlights on the nearest stone processing plant, you'd barely know they were there. Apart from one thing. From early in the morning -and I do mean early- HGV's are using the road, and with a surprising volume of traffic. The volume and type of traffic meant we weren't prepared to let our kids (under 10) ride the half mile to the entrance to the High Peaks cycle path. Also, the website indicated a bike store. That needs a little more clarity- it was a shed which didn't have a lock. Our bikes aren't worth a great deal so we didn't mind leaving them in there but if I had a high value machine, I'd have to bring it inside. Overall, the cottage is well equipped, warm, and a good holiday base. I think 6 adults might find it a squeeze but for a family of 5 it was absolutely fine. It is ideally located and there is plenty for a young family to do. The most we ever drove was about half an hour to Curbar Edge. There's plenty much closer, including the National Stone Centre, Carsington Water, Matlock Bath and Crich. The quarry traffic was the downside. 8 wheeler HGV's going past at 40mph at 5am just yards from your head was a touch disconcerting and was loud enough to wake the kids up once or twice. However, overall we'd be happy to go again.
