Set within the magnificent Estate of Maunsel House which was built in the 13th century and is the ancestral home of the Slade Family. The house and grounds are steeped in tremendous history with more than a touch of eccentricity a reflection of its owner Sir Benjamin Slade 7th Baronet whom if around will welcome you to look around the main house with a tour and a glass of champagne. Mill Farmhouse ref UKC1679 is a spacious house with oak floors and doors and a wood burner great for the winter evenings. In years gone by Barn Owl Cottage ref UKC1683 was the site of Maunsel’s own wheelwright who kept a barn owl as a pet. Since then it has been converted into a beautiful cottage with great views overlooking the estates many lakes. Dairy Mead Lodge ref UKC1680 is a thatched converted dairy situated within a minute’s walk of Maunsel House. It’s in a great position overlooking the fishing lakes and the ornamental ponds. The lodge is situated at the top of the drive overlooking Maunsel House Estate’s beautiful parkland with its roaming shetland ponies and birdlife. This is a 6 person cottage and had settee for 2 people ! The hire company phoned and the owner assured us there would be a second when we got there. We arrived to find the living room was very cramped for 4 people. The heating was not working and although the owners came straight away the problem wasn’t fixed until after 9pm with men in and out. It was freezing and took another 24 hours to feel warm. Where the room was cramped we had to keep moving our chairs while eating dinner for them to get by. Maintenance was poor with rotten door frames. The front door would not lock and we had to do a bit of DIY to make it secure. The kitchen was the most poorly equipped I have ever come across. The owner did bring us a casserole mixing bowl and dish to use. Thank goodness I’d taken my own knife as there wasn’t one that cut more than butter. I guess you aren’t expected to cook and eat in self catering places ! There was a downstairs bedroom which was not negotiable for me being partially disabled. I could get in bed but could not get across room to use very small chest of drawers. I had to live out of my bag all week. There was a clothes rail and the corner of the bed was almost in the fire place. The shower had a step up and there was nothing to hold. The toilet downstairs was small and not at all suitable. I had to leave the door open so my husband could come and hoist me up. Embarrassing as it was next to kitchen. We had to wash up plates and cutlery between courses. The back door cannot be opened as there is a meter box stopping it. Dangerous as there is no way out should there be a fire in kitchen !!!! Our friends were comfortable upstairs but it was hopeless for us - even though I had phoned and asked relevant questions several times. After a very cramped dinner we had to stack chairs and table to be able to get the four of us on two such low settees only one of us could get out of them without help. The big house is fabulous and if you do go ask for a tour. Amazing. We found out that the cottages are set up for overnight wedding guests. No good for a weeks stay. Six of you and there’d be nowhere to sit ! Shame as area is good and it could be really nice.

We had a lovely week at Front Lodge, it is spacious and was very clean. Although it advertised as having Sky, it does in fact only have Freeview, but that is a minor matter. The beds were comfortable, and the bedroom and shower room downstairs would be helpful if a member of the party has mobility issues. We were offered a tour of the main house and that was well worth doing.

Very comfortable cottage. Warm. Shower downstairs excellent. Brilliant view from windows of parkland and wildlife. Great being able to walk the dogs anywhere in the grounds. We also enjoyed visiting the house and the tour round the rooms. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Lovely relaxing get holiday.
