“A beautiful, idyllic lakeland cottage with direct access to Coniston Water” was our main reason for booking Potter Wheel. On reading several reviews on our return from a week in Coniston we don’t understand how scores can fluctuate from 2s to 10s without some serious attention being given by the owners. We are in agreement with the lower end of ratings as we agree with previous comments that there are a number of signs that there is some updating to do. The cottage felt ‘surface clean’ but definitely had a smell and on closer inspection would benefit from a deep clean. The general cleanliness of the bathroom (towel rail and toilet seat) and the kitchen was suspicious. The shower pump has to be switched on before you use the shower which we didn’t realise (the switch is under the sink at the back of the cupboard so not obvious). When it is on though the noise from the pump is so significant that you have to turn it off when finished. The main bedroom is very pretty and comfortable which was just as well as we attempted to use the second bedroom downstairs on the first night but couldn’t sleep because of the aforementioned pump – which we were advised to switch off after reporting the issue. The twin room had serious water damage to the plasterwork and was quite an eye-sore, beds were also very creaky and uncomfortable. The sofas are noted in the cottage documents as needing the cushions plumping regularly, the reality is the sofas need replacing as they are very uncomfortable. The lack of internet/wifi affected us in that we had to resort to good old-fashioned reading of brochures and visits to the Information Centre. The location though is fabulous; well off the main road and private access to the lakeside/beach, but we had difficulty locating it initially because of its seclusion – not signed at bottom of drive! For its facilities we thought it was expensive and requires a bit of investment in the property which would improve it significantly. We would go back if these minor issues were sorted, however, for now, and from one who rents cottages at least twice a year, this is one of the more disappointing ones and didn’t meet our expectations.

I have no complaints about the cottage. It is very old and built to last with thick stone walls and small windows. Because of this we found we had to use the heating at night and keep the lighting on if we were there in the day even though it was sunny outside. Lights and heating worked well so this was no problem. We found the spiral stairs a bit daunting so slept downstairs in the single beds. This wasnt a problem except the mattresses were quite hard. Probably ok for kids but we are a bit older. To be honest the access would have been difficult for anyone with mobility problems however the location was superb and worth ignoring a bit of discomfort. Stunning veiws over the lake just a short walk along the garden down to the little private shore front and so peaceful. The walks available were not obvious to begin with but once we started exploring we found you could walk just about anywhere if you had the legs for it. A good place to start was the footpath almost opposite the road entrance. Cross the road (carefully) go to the right a few steps and you will come to a tarmac path (looks like a road entrance). Walk up a little ways up and you realise its actually an unmarked footpath. You can walk for miles. The dogs had a whale of a time. You can walk most of the way around the lake side but it is a very long way and there are some private areas that you have to go onto the road. You will probably meet a lot of sheep. They are roaming and often on the road which is very narrow so drive slowly! Take an OS map with you. The nearest shops are 5 miles away so make sure you stop and shop before you get there. Best supermarkets are in Ulverston. Fish and chips are good in the chippy if you drive left and pub food is good if you turn right towards Coniston. Lakeshore cafe cake is lovely and huge! Great ice creams too. All in all we had a lovely stay in a wonderful location and would return.

Very well equipped and comfortable. Despite good weather, heating being on was a blessing and the cottage was really snug. There were maintenance problems that should really have been rectified prior to our arrival: bulbs out and smoke alarm beeping due to low battery. However, these were fixed within 45 minutes of being report which was first class service. Can certainly recommend for a walking holiday and swimming in the lake prior to breakfast just at the bottom of the garden.

A lovely cosy cottage. We had a very cold grey drizzly week but the cottage was lovely and warm. It would have been fantastic this Easter with record temperatures and the lake at the bottom of the garden! The cottage was very well equipped and lovely to look at. The spiral staircase could have been a problem in the night with the bathroom down below, however we are pretty fit seventy year olds! We took the dog for nice walks on the common and round High Dam on the Hawkshead- Lakeside road.

Potters Wheel is a very cosy cottage. It has everything you could possibly need when self catering. The location was good for us as we enjoy the peace and quiet and being close to nature. There are lots of walks in the area and only a short drive into Coniston for excellent meals. It has a wonderful walk beside the lake into town( 5ish miles).I would recommend this cottage to everyone (already have friends wanting to book) who loves the great outdoors but likes some comfort at the end of the day.

A lovely, well equipped cottage. However, the garden and patio were virtually unusable. The garden is shared and not dog safe and is basically a huge rock. Sheep run through the garden and there is a fairly busy road at the bottom of the drive which meant. We had to supervise the dogs at all times when outside. We did enjoy our stay though and the cottage is very comfortable.
