Standing opposite the owners’ home it has been tastefully converted from a former coach house. Retaining much of its original character it is situated in a cobbled courtyard with the original restored well. All around are beautiful walks with Cross Fell only a morning’s stroll away. Fishing is available on Blencarn Lake and River Eden. Tour the Yorkshire Dales the Lake District and Border Country with Lake Ullswater only half an hour’s drive. Such a lovely place. We booked last minute for a New Years getaway. We arrived and it looked beautiful with a little Christmas’s tree in the lounge all lit up. There was also homemade scones, chocolates and a bottle of fizz for us! Location good for access to the lakes. Really close to lacys caves and Long meg. Very peaceful that time of year.

This is the nicest cottages we’ve stayed in since we started using cottages.com! It’s set in a beautiful quadrangle of an old coaching inn with a real late mediaeval well! Beautiful countryside and a garden that is visited by many bird types a red squirrels! Inside, the cottage is warm and comfortable, nicely furnished with plenty of room. Would I recommend this place? Your absolutely dead right I would!

We were less than impressed I am afraid the cottage is rather tired and could do with quite a lot of attention paying to it. Shame as it could be lovely.

A lovely cottage in a great location. Only on a short break, so would love to return to see more of this lovely area. Dogs very welcome and plenty of good walks in this area.

Had to buy a kettle as the one provided was full of limescale. The toaster was dirty and wouldn't use. The rings on the cooker were not clean and the cooker overall was not operational. General cleanliness not up to a good standard. Not told beforehand that amenities highlighted on the website were closed in certain months. If we had not taken provisions would have been caught very short. Television was a portable and while this may not be an issue for some in October with no local amenities this was a necessity. Bed linen and towels need to be looked at as very tired.

Wonderful week. Cottage was just big enough for 2. Small private garden. Good position for The Lakes and Northumberland

A very comfortable small cottage A great centre for visiting the North Pennines, the North West Dales and the Lakes. Local walks are excellent on very quiet country roads or off road into the fells (footpaths are not as well marked as they should be

Smittergill is a neat little cottage with just the right size of garden attached. There is accommodation opposite and we felt we had to keep the blinds down but there was no noise from the occupants. There is a shower cubicle which was fine but if you don't want to have a shower every time you want to wash your hair it was a little tricky - picture me leaning over the cubicle on my tiptoes with soap in my eyes trying to turn the shower head off. We enjoyed our time at the cottage and the fact that we could get Netflix on the tv added to our evening relaxation.

Both of us and our dog had a wonderful relaxing time. Very much appreciated the fresh scones on arrival. It was lovely of the owners to come and say hello a couple of times and was reassuring to know that they were only around the corner if we needed any help. The cottage had everything we needed, spacious and comfortable.
