smugglers is a great place to make your base, peaceful location

The directions to the cottage could be better as we took the wrong road, which was very narrow but we were shown the correct route on arrival. This could be rectified by a few signs to follow on the main road. The owner welcomed us and was on hand for anything we needed. The cottage was as described and as shown in the pictures. It had everything we needed. We took 3 dogs and they were very welcomed. The cottage was the perfect base to explore the coastal paths and local area. We had a great time and had everything we needed. The cottage was cosy and comfortable.

Lovely cottage, only bit that disappointed that was the “enclosed garden” although suitable for dogs, was not enclosed enough, could not just let the dogs out to the garden, had to go with them in case they wandered off, could be solved by fencing front of cottage and adding a front gate. But lovely location, lovely cottage and enjoyed our holiday.

If all you want from your holiday accommodation is to get hot shower and sit down after walking with your dogs all day, without worrying about the mess your dogs are making then this is the place for you. However if you are going to allow up to three dogs into accommodation please make sure that there is no sign of dog left for following guests. The rug in the kitchen, dining, living room had a distinct ouder of damp dog and I am not convinced that dogs had not been allowed to sleep on the beds coverlet. Unfortunately apart from the wet room the rest of the "cottage" was not particularly clean either the kitchen unit was grubby with old grease, food debris was evident and all utensils required washing before use. The blinds throughout were grimey and the beautiful slate floor was the victim of someone who doesn't know how to use a mop and hot soapy water correctly or how to move furniture out of the way for cleaning. On the positive the owner was delightful upon our arrival and a cream tea was provided along with fresh cut flowers, the location was first class but I feel that some of the money saved on cleaning could be used to provide a semi decent road surface.

Very hard to review positively. Our first concerns were raised a week before arrival when we saw recent reviews all negatively critiquing the cottage regarding size and cleanliness. I was worried about this so phoned the owner who assured me. I was too easily persuaded. On arrival, after driving down the tightest driveway imaginable (was briskly told it was the wrong way to go), we were introduced to the owner who immediately wanted to know if we were satisfied. As we made clear then and will do now, we were not. The photos we had seen when we booked were different. There is no BBQ or patio. The "shower room" is absolutely tiny and impractical. It is impossible to shower without soaking the entire place. The photos are very, very misleading. Size is the biggest issue. Its tiny. More or less a room split in two with one consisting of a bed and the other a "kitchen" with a sofa and table and chairs. Garden again is tiny and not of any real use at all. There is a strange smell due to lack of ventilation in the property. We left the windows open for the entirety of our stay and still had to rely on a Jelly Belly car freshener to keep the smell tolerable. The location was the one saving grace. Great walks to the coast and amongst the tin mines. Easy access to Penzance (great day out) and lands end (walk from Sennen Cove to Lands end is a must). The village is about 15 mins walk and two great pubs a short drive away; The North Inn and The Queens Arms (both about 5 mins drive). Avoid the Trewellard Arms (dead atmosphere and poor food). Cleanliness was another issue. We were due to arrive at 12:30 (previously arranged with the owner) however at 12:13 we received a call saying the housekeeper was running late. Luckily we were at the Healeys Cider Farm (definitely go) and arrived at 2:45. However it wasn't clean. There were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and general dust and dirt. I don't know who the housekeeper is but I wasn't convinced any effort had been put in. Not dog friendly at all. We have a westie and thought the garden would be enclosed. It's not and is not safe to let your pet be in the garden. Overall a disappointing place in a beautiful part of the world. Size and details need to be much clearer and I would agree with previous reviews. Also far too expensive and don't tell people if they aren't happy "that they don't have to stay" and "maybe cottages.com can find you somewhere else". This isn't a vendetta it's the truth.

Let's start at the beginning- getting there! The directions are not adequate. Nearly gave up finding it. Called owner many times on landline with no answer. Eventually saw on email a mobile which she picked up saying she doesn't answer landline. Drive into the access lane bottomed my car out. Eventually saw place where the car could pass and then drove down very narrow courty lane and found the cottage. Anyone precious about their car dont book!!. The cottage is SMALL. Just one wall unit available for food as the others have appliances or saucepans etc cleverly stored. Yes all the appliances etc are there but no space for food prep or dish draining etc so home cooking was not a pleasant experience and we gave up trying. Onto the bedroom - its SMALL. One small fitted cupboard which also houses the boiler plus 8 coat hangers. A tray is situated under the bed for all your other clothes. We lived out of our suitcases. Onto the 'wetroom'. Yep its WET!!. You can save time by sitting on the loo, cleaning your teeth and having a shower at the same time. The floor remains constantly wet and shoes need to be worn to visit the bathroom after the first shower. Tip - leave the bath mat on the bedroom floor outside the wet room so you can wipe your feet on the way out. The garden is not enclosed so thankfully we had a long lead to thether our dog by. The sea view is visible when you stand up and peep between the foliage. Location is lovely though.

Unfortunately we left after 2 days. There was a strong odour about the property and incredibly small, we purchased candles to try and elevate the smell but no joy. The wet room is so tiny, more like a cupboard. I feel the description & photos are a bit misleading as the cottage is in very close proximity to other residents/properties. The farm surroundings is very untidy with piles of rubble in places. I believe the photographs taken of Smugglers were done prior to these other properties being developed and therefore there really isn’t any kind of view from the cottage or garden (if that what you want to call it). It would have been nice to be able to spend an evening sitting outside watching the sunset but the outside space was sorely lacking. The cottage itself has very little storage and is very dark and dingy. I personally think the description should be rethought. Very disappointed.

The cottage is set in lovely surroundings, walking distance to coast and tin mines.Although cottage was small it was clean and adequate. The owner was very friendly and supplied a cream tea and flowers on arrival. Unfortunately there was building work going on right next to the cottage. On the last day we wanted to chill out before leaving, but what with building work, loud music and a dog barking, it was impossible to relax. One last point the track leading up to the cottage was very rugged, you need a 4 x4 or a large vehicle.

Beautiful location owners lovely. Photos on website deceptive...is a lot smaller in reality. Poorly equipped, problems with heating and shower. Wet room was tiny. Such a shame. Sorry to say...we won’t go back.

    out of 10

On arrival we we disappointed with all the building rubbish around(not materials) plastic sacks and odd bits of wood etc. The garden was really scruffy and the furniture was broken. Inside the cottage was clean and tidy but smelt very damp! There was no storage area for coats and boots, or clothes. The wet room floor stayed wet all day so to use the loo you got wet feet. Also the drain pipe from the hand basin leaked. The towel rail was right next to the toilet so if on, would burn your leg! And the view of the sea was none existant from the actual cottage as was stated. Neighbours in cottage further down had a dog which constantly barked and howled.

Ridiculously small wet room which smelled of dirty drains when we arrived. During the first night my husband went to the loo and discovered that the floor was wet, coming from the toilet end. Owner, her builder and plumber all maintained it was condensation. I’m sorry, but condensation does not smell like that. We had to mop up the floor several times a day, and were mopping up not just water but bits of debris. After 4 days the smell and constant cleaning was too much and we left early. On top of all that, it is very difficult to wash your face in that sink; a swivel tap would be a much better idea. There is no loo roll holder, so the loo roll has to sit either behind you on the cistern or on top of the heated towel rail. Not convenient for those with back problems. There is no shower caddy so toiletries have to be constantly tidied away. The wet room is barely wider than the toilet, with the heated towel rail mounted alongside I burned my leg several times (Couldn’t turn it off because we were told to leave it on to help with the ‘condensation’). The skirting board behind the bed was thick with dust, as was the headboard end of the bed frame. The cross members of the dining chairs were in a similar state. The storage basket under the bed is a necessity as cupboard/drawer space is limited, but when I pulled it out it brought out a huge clump of old hair/dust. To say there’s a sea view is taking things a bit too far as the only way to see the sea is to stand at the door and look between the half refurbished barn 8ft in front of the door and the neighbour’s house. You can’t even see the sea if your sitting in the cottage because it’s behind you. Similarly, there is absolutely no view of the sea when sitting in the garden. On the plus side, all the towels smelled really nice.

Great cottage, at first you think small but everything goes somewhere and snug. Great location for walking, footpaths everywhere. Would recommend the North Inn for great curries

    out of 10

Directions to the cottage are confusing and almost impossible if it is dark the first time you arrive. The cottage is Very compact but everything you need is there and the owners welcome was lovely and then they allowed you privacy we have 3 dogs and were relaxed with them here ?

    out of 10

Well equipped and comfortable, However, The actual cottage is advertised as having a sea view, but does not there is only a sea "peep" from the garden. Prior notice on booking of the long unmade track and field crossing to the cottage would have been useful. You do not need a 4x4 but a sports car or low slung vehicle may be compromised, However, Quiet location close to coastal path and levant and geevor mines .Ideal for walkers and dogs,

Cosy warm and very comfortable cottage. Dog friendly fantastic location owner very helpful . And welcoming there if you need advice or any help . She is on hand but leaves you to enjoy your holiday . Nice cream tea waiting and milk tea and coffee . Plenty of peace and quiet rural but also close to the sea . Would stay again as we had a great holiday . In smugglers Highly recomend perfect for couples and your dogs will love it .
