Strathy Point Lighthouse is situated in a dramatic location on the end of a promontory on the stunning north coast of Scotland. South Keeper’s Cottage forms part of the main building and enjoys unbelievable and uninterrupted seascape views westward along the north coast. Overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean, the lighthouse is no longer in use, but the surrounding hills, lochs, cliffs and rocky outcrops provide a wonderful location for walking, sea fishing, wildlife watching and just enjoying the spectacular and ever-changing seascapes that this totally unspoilt, wild and dramatic landscape offers.
South Keeper’s Cottage is all one level and accessed via its own original entrance, which leads into a porch that’s perfect for muddy boots and hanging coats after exploring the clifftops and coves. The living room is beautifully finished with a comfy corner sofa. The large and spacious hallway leads to a corner off which the master bedroom is located. This bedroom has lots of space, is finished to a beautiful standard and enjoys possibly one of the best views a bedroom could ever have along the north coast of Scotland. The hallway continues towards the kitchen/dining room at the far end of the cottage, but before that there’s a spacious twin room and large double room, both spacious and cleverly decorated. The kitchen/dining room is a wonderful space with expertly chosen feature wallpaper really completing this light room with views across the grassy cliffs to the Atlantic Ocean.
The immediate surroundings are a haven for wildlife. Dolphins, whales, porpoises, seals and otters all frequent this shoreline. There are numerous seabirds and wonderful and rare wild flowers in the grassy slopes which have been cropped close by the local sheep. Nature lovers will be spoilt for choice. There is also a colony of puffins at nearby Melvich. The village of Strathy is just 2 miles away where you will find a pub, café and a beautiful sandy beach. The adjoining village of Melvich provides further facilities including a shop and small restaurant. The main coast road forms part of the renowned North Coast 500 route, which passes through some of the most spectacular scenery to be found anywhere in the UK. The thriving town of Thurso is just 20 minutes’ drive away with a very good selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. There are numerous places of interest in the vicinity, including historical sites, castles, stunning beaches and a wide variety of sports and pastimes, including kayaking, horse riding, sailing, golf and fishing (sea fishing is free, directly off the rocks down below the lighthouse). Beach 2 miles. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
South Keeper’s Cottage can be booked together with Principal Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage (ref UK5621) to accommodate up to 10 guests.
