Sweet Lassie Cottage is a charming, Grade II listed, stone-built terraced cottage, dating back from approximately 1680 and steeped in history. It sits in the most historic part of Richmond, on the shoulder of the castle hill, only a very short level walk to the marketplace. The name of the cottage is derived from the local love song ’The Lass of Richmond Hill’ and this romantic cottage celebrates this legend of the Dales, with various Sweet Lassie images and memorabilia throughout the cottage.
The accommodation is arranged over three floors with a small entrance porch leading to the granite-topped modern kitchen and cosy dining area with stone-flagged floor and oak beams. A perfect retreat to sit and unwind over a home cooked meal and a glass of wine on an evening. Stairs to the first floor lead to a comfortable living room with beams and electric log-effect stove, TV and sofa giving an inviting place to relax and unwind after a day out exploring the town or the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Further stairs lead to the romantic-themed bedroom with a brass double bed and the modern shower room next door. There is a roof-top view towards the hills and you get a lovely view of the sunrise in the mornings. To the right are the walls of the ancient castle-keep. Sweet Lassie is a perfect cottage for two that oozes character and charm with stone flagged floors, original beamed ceilings, fireplaces and many nooks and crannies. The stairs are original stone-built, although carpeted for comfort, and you feel a sense of adventure as you climb to the first and second floors and discover the delights of this small and surprising cottage. Because there are two flights of original stone stairs, they are a bit steeper than modern stairs, we do not recommend this cottage for the very elderly or those who are mobility-impaired.
Sweet Lassie Cottage is ideally situated just around the corner from the cobbled marketplace, with many small independent shops, bars and cafés. Turning right at the cottage front door, the road leads upwards becoming Castle Wynd, on the shoulder of Richmond Hill, leading up to the castle. Alternatively, head downhill and you arrive in less than 5 minutes to the River Swale with its beautiful riverside walks and waterfalls. Two picnic chairs are available at the cottage to take with you to enjoy a picnic by the falls. Step outside the door and almost opposite you will find the ’Secret Garden’ at number 3, Millgate, a truly stunning garden, packed with delightful flowers and many secluded seating areas (open Apr-Sep). For a small entrance fee (honesty box) you can visit, explore and relax in a gorgeous garden from 9.00am until 5.00pm daily. Richmond has an abundance of attractions whether it’s for a short break or a week of exploring. Although the last train left Richmond station in 1969, volunteers helped to bring the original building back to life the building and in 2007 was re-opened as The Station and is now a bustling centre hosting art and craft exhibitions, a three-screen cinema, café, shop selling interesting jewellery, cards and textiles, an award-winning bakery/delicatessen, micro-brewery and an ice cream parlour. On the same site there is an indoor swimming pool and health club. The town sits on the Coast to Coast walk so it is well supplied with walking shops as well as restaurants of all types and price ranges. It is, in short, the perfect base to explore the marvellous Yorkshire Dales National Park. Shop, pubs and restaurants 500 yards.
