Byre Cottage is a quirky, semi-detached character filled cottage converted from an old farm steading. With beautiful views out over Kirkcudbright to the River Dee estuary and onto the Solway Firth by the Little Ross Island below the hills of Cairnharrow and Cairnsmore of Fleet. The views continually change with the tide and season so you will never get tired of gazing out of the large windows. It is just a short walk into Kirkcudbright, known as the ’Artist’s Town’ as in the late 19th and early 20th-century it was home to many celebrated artists; the town had a long association with the Glasgow art movement. With local galleries still holding regular exhibitions of paintings and craftwork, it is still seen as a hub of contemporary art. More recently the town has provided a backdrop for a number of television shows and film including the cult 1973 horror film ’The Wicker Man’. There is nothing scary about the town itself though which is home to a range of independent shops, a castle and a bustling, working harbour with a scallop fleet. The area has a great number of sandy beaches providing great coastal walks with stunning backdrops. During the summer there are a whole host of events taking place including the Kirkcudbright Tattoo and firework display, the famous Riding of the Marshes, a children’s festival and a food festival. The quiet country roads are ideal for gentle bike rides, or if you fancy something a bit more rigorous you can tackle the 7Stanes, mountain biking heaven! Nearby the Galloway Activity Centre has exhilarating activities set on the banks of Loch Ken from paddle boarding and windsurfing to laser tag and climbing. For a more relaxed day why not take in a local museum, the wildlife park or a nature reserve with fantastic bird colonies. You’ll never get bored in the area and at the end of the day Byre Cottage is a warm and comfortable base to rest your weary head. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

A lovely well equipped cottage, set in beautiful countryside but within walking distance of Kirkcudbright.

A convenient place for the four of us. Lovely view to the west and we were blessed with good weather - we could enjoy our evening meal and watch the sun set behind Cairnsmore of Fleet.

Lovely cottage with everything you could want, in a fantastic location. One, of several cottages of converted old farm buildings on a working farm on the outskirts of Kirkcudbright. The cottage is cosy, and also spacious, lovely big dinning kitchen, a long lounge with comfortable sofas and lovely big full length windows. The upstairs bedroom has lots of room and the bed is a king size with what I’d say was a medium to hard mattress, very comfortable once I got used to the bed squeaking when you move - it’s a wooden bed. Lots of room upstairs, and very airy and light with two large velux windows. We had a lovely week here. The enclose gravel garden with seating was lovely to sit out in with the dogs, we even had our fish and chips out in it one evening. Our only one wee disappointment was the internet connection, or it would have been 10 stars! It’s a dongle on the 3 network, which is the best network in the area for coverage, but it couldn’t handle uploading pictures, and definitely no streaming. Some days we couldn’t even get email. Thankfully we had both downloaded several books and we read them instead, we’ not tv watchers. Other than that it’s a fantastic cottage and we would definitely stay there again, and have already recommend it to others. Kirkcudbright is a lovely town, and the cottage is a great base to go and visit all the area. We drove to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse which I thoroughly recommend, the drive is a delight. We also went to PortPatrick, and Stranraer. Also lots of local roads to go and see the views, Dhoon bay for dog walking was lovely. Highly recommend.

Excellently renovated cottage with beautiful views and lots of amenities in Kirkcudbright and things to do in the area. Many thanks to Mr Wright for his help when there was a power cut as we were about to cook tea on our first night.

We had a lovely week in The Byre cottage it was very comfortable and clean with everything we needed and in a beautiful location. The only downside to our holiday was the surrounding towns are not very dog friendly so don’t think we would visit this area again

This was our second visit to Byre Cottage. The cottage is furnished to a high standard and the owners attention to detail is very good. The cottage is located at the top of a hill which is why I cannot give the location 10 out of 10!! However due to the this views over St Marys Isle and the estuary are really excellent. We may return....!!

Very, clean, comfortable cottage in a gorgeous, peaceful location with wonderful views. Ten minute walk into Kirkcudbright which has a good variety of shops, pubs and cafes. Extremely welcoming owners who were on hand for any issues although we didn't have any. Enclosed garden so great for dogs and as a little sun trap in which to sit and admire the view.

Great stay, beautiful views and area, fab cottage but as we have a dog would recommend gate is put on next door garden and your garden so it is fully enclosed for dogs which makes life much easier and gives piece of mind.
