• About The Forge Cottage

Peacefully set amid the rolling countryside of a 200-acre sheep farm, this collection of cottages has been converted from the old farm stables, bakery and dairy, have their own individual character and retain many of their original features. The tranquil location makes this the perfect place to relax and unwind while the many footpaths and cycle routes are an excellent way to enjoy the surrounding countryside and views. Situated on the Durham/Northumberland border, Derwent Grange is ideally located for exploring the many attractions both counties have to offer. The historic city of Durham, with its magnificent cathedral and river boat trips, the market town of Barnard Castle with its 12th-century castle, and medieval Raby Castle are all just a short drive away. The award-winning Beamish Open Air Museum is just 13 miles away, and is well worth a visit. Newcastle and Gateshead offer an array of museums and art galleries along with excellent shopping and are only 18 miles away. The breathtaking scenery of the Northumberland National Park is within half an hour’s drive as is Hadrian’s Wall. A little further afield are Alnwick Castle and Gardens while the castles and gloriously unspoilt coastline of Northumberland are around an hour’s drive. Shop and pub serving food 1 mile.

We enjoyed our holiday at Forge Cottage. Limited cooking facilities, but we mainly ate out. Transport needed.

Cooking facilities were basic. We had to ask for the table top oven as it was missing. We had two teaspoons! The mattress on the bed was too soft. We were met by the owner's son who was very helpful. The owner was away for the weekend and did not make himself known to us during the week. However everyone who spoke to us on the farm was very friendly.
