Dating back to the 16th-century, this Grade II Listed Yorkshire longhouse is located in the picturesque market town of Pickering, on the edge of the beautiful North York Moors National Park. The cottage, adjacent to the owner’s home, is a fine example of a cruck-framed Yorkshire longhouse which was traditionally built to accommodate both family and cattle under one roof. It is featured alongside similar longhouses in Ryedale, in a book entitled ‘Houses of the North York Moors’ by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. The house is brimming with character, having a host of original features such as the oak cruck beams, stone flagged floors, exposed stonework, and a traditional cast iron Victorian range with a ‘smoke window’ in the dining room.
Inside this spacious cottage is decorated in a style to compliment the character of the cottage. Downstairs, the central dining room has a seating area around the decorative, Victorian range and a cottage dining table and chairs. The dining room leads into a spacious fully equipped kitchen (with a large farmhouse table), also into a cosy snug with its own decorative open fireplace, and to a separate living room. In the impressive living room, the cruck frame is exposed to the eaves in a vaulted ceiling; there is plenty of comfortable seating around a wood burner, while the kitchen is fully equipped with a range cooker. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The master bedroom has an imposing timber frame exposed to the eaves and accommodates three people having a kingsize bed and a single bed. There is also a twin room and a double room. A small courtyard garden is accessed through patio doors from the living room.
The Long House is conveniently situated along the A170, just minutes from Pickering centre with its many fine inns, cafés, restaurants and attractions, including a 12th-century castle and the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway running through the heart of the National Park. Quaint villages, abbey ruins, National Trust properties and a wealth of activities including numerous walking trails and mountain biking in Dalby Forest are within easy reach. The coast is just a short drive away, with the lively coastal resort of Scarborough 14 miles to the east. Thornton-le-Dale, Dalby Forest and the North York Moors National Park are all within a few miles. The walled city of York is just 50 minutes away and here you’ll find the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. The gothic fishing town of Whitby is also a just a short drive with its links to Bram Stokers ‘Dracula’, an array of festivals and events, and 3 miles of beach. Beach 14 miles. Shop and restaurant ½ mile, pub 200 yards.

Nice cottage with bags of character but you need to be careful due to uneven floors and differing levels of rooms. Loved all the original beams etc though.

Very nice cottage in a good location . The large comfy lounge , with seating for all is particularly lovely . The location for an easy walk into Pickering is good , just down the road The Sun Inn is well worth a visit . The cottage is located on quite a busy main road which can be noisy if your unused to traffic noise as we are but that is the compromise for a town centre location . The second double bedroom is slightly awkward as there is only access from one side , however I would recommend The long House for your stay in lovely Pickering .
