It’s sweeping golden beach is great for kids and dog friendly all year round. Further north are the inspiring villages of Staithes and Saltburn, the latter a surfers paradise with a Victorian pier and tram, and beyond the enormous beach going to Marske and Redcar. To the south at Sandsend the waves dramatically crash over the sea wall at high tide, Whitby, bursting with history and drawing guests from around the world; the tangle of cobbled streets in the village of Robin Hood’s Bay cling to the cliff edge, with houses spilling right down to the water’s edge. There are fabulous walking trails including the Cleveland Way which follows the cliff tops.

Perhaps take the heritage steam train from Whitby on an adventure across the Esk valley, there are some quaint villages to visit along the way.
