We had an extended family gathering here for a family occasion - the house was great, very clean (apart from one dirty fork in the cutlery drawer!). All the rooms were generous sizes , especially the two ensuite bedrooms, and plenty of room for everyone- the large table in the kitchen diner was perfect for both family meals and playing games. Beds were very comfortable (I have a bad back so thats very important for me) and there was plenty of hot water when we needed it. There were quite a lot of small steps up and down ( between kitchen diner and hall, hall and sitting room, hall and bathroom- the latter caught us all out but was fine once we knew it was there) and we had someone with limited mobility so it was a bit of a challenge. The games room was popular. There were lovely country walks from the house and nice views too. We had no problem fitting two medium sized cars on the drive. We didnt use the garden much as the weather was cold - it was quirky with different levels and seating areas, and would be fun for children to explore and play in. Just note that a neighbours dog came calling and ran around the garden for a while and jumped up on us when we went out to see what was going on- it was not a problem to us but might have been to small or nervous folks. The owner came and claimed it and I would suggest just waiting inside until they do as it was very friendly and bouncy. We would definitely revist!

The Old Smithy was perfect for a long weekend with a group of friends, the accommodation is spacious, clean, extremely well equipped and we liked the layout and the immediate surroundings. It was great to be in such a quiet area of Derbyshire, with walks from the door and dark skies, although it was very accessible for all of us. Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful cottage. The setting & location was perfect, with plenty of walks for our dog. The children particularly enjoyed the books & board games and my 6 year old was very excited when he spotted the Wii games room!. The bedrooms were all perfectly set up with both the children having their own rooms upstairs with us. In fact all the facilities in the property were great, with everything we needed for a lovely family break. Honestly it felt like home from home, So clean and welcoming. We will be back again I’m sure!

The cottage is lovely and perfect for a family gathering. Two staircases lead to separate bedroom groups and there's a downstairs bedroom too. Plenty of kitchen equipment, spacious and warm, lots of toys and books.

We loved our weekend at the Old Smithy and enjoyed it's rural location but still within walking distance of a village pub! The house is very well equipped and really cosy. We didn't use the games room as it was located away from the house in a separate wooden structure and the small table football and Wii were not enough of a draw for 7 mature women to venture out there). The log burner is brilliant but it would be nice to have extra logs (available as a chargeable extra if necessary) as only half a basket was provided which only lasted a couple of hours on our first night, meaning we had to drive out to shop for logs next day. Having towels provided was great - maybe bath sheets would be better to cover adult guest modesty when sharing bedrooms and bathrooms. There's not much hanging space in a couple of the bedrooms, so some hooks would certainly help, as would a mirror in every room. Extra bins are needed outside, particularly as they were over half full when we arrived. The dishwasher needs some maintenance or maybe just salt/rinse aid as it didn't clean dishes well enough. Lovely big fridge and freezer and loads of plates and glasses etc (although previous guests had left behind a cracked glass and chipped gravy boat). Thanks for leaving a pint of milk, biscuits, crisps and most importantly chocolate as a welcome gift - much appreciatted!! We will be back again to the Old Smithy soon.

A delightful cottage: spacious, superbly equipped and tastefully decorated. Perfect for a family getaway / celebration. Quiet location with everything you need a short drive away. True to the description. The owner was contactable by email during our stay, friendly and approachable. Our party of eight (grown-up children and partners) had a fantastic time together. We hope to return!

Three generations shared the house. The hosts had provided a well-equipped kitchen and lots of books suitable for both adults and children, as well as games. The garden is quirky with its multiple levels but pleasant for both playing and sitting. Our single negative comment would be that the lighting level in the living room was very low through most of the day, so reading in the evening, for instance, was almost impossible (for older eyes, at least!) The piano and guitar were unexpected bonuses.

Simply amazing! The cottage was homey, spacious, very accommodating, cosy, practical and beautiful. We went as a family of 7, the youngest being 2 and the eldest being 83; the downstairs bathroom and bedroom were ideal and very handy. The garden is beautiful; with patio, a bbq, a shed filled with children’s toys, flowers, lawn and trees. What more could you want? We would 100% recommend!

We found The Old Smithy with no problems, the car park area was a little odd though, we have an estate car and there was only room for our 1 car and it had to be parked corner ways. We was very excited to get in and see the welcome pack as it was advertised, there wasn't one only 2 pints of milk in the fridge!! Not quite as good or exciting. We wrote in the feedback book about this and the owner did text back and say the cleaner was meant to have left the items and hadn't. (There was no mention of any other people in the feedback book saying thank you for anything also, that usually in cottages we have stayed in someone has said something. So we will never know if that was the truth or not.) It was lovely and spacious, There was me and my husband, our grown up daughter and mum and the way the house was set out we were able to sleep in bedrooms far away from each other, to give each other space and (snoring!!!!) The bed linen was quality and the beds were lovely and comfortable. Some of the blinds did need either trying to clean or getting new though. The bedroom leading upstairs from the kitchen had very badly squeaking floorboards we did find, my mum downstairs in the bedroom was hearing us, this did make it that we had to be very mindful of getting up in the night for the toilet or getting up early as not to wake her. We did find the dishwasher had dirty pots in from the previous guests, I didn't appreciate that and the coffee cafetiere had coffee still in the bottom of it. The light switches in the house downstairs was very odd, we never got to the bottom of them in the week was there. It's a puzzle for us, but maybe others know about how this works and its easy we was just a little thick! The lounge was big but dark in the day, we didn't mind this we was out most of the time and didn't watch much tv, we sat in the Dining room in the evenings at the lovely big table and it was so bright in there. I must add, we took my elderly mum, and the floors were boards all the same colour downstairs. We was very worried about steps down to the dinning room and a little step up into the lounge and a step down to the downstairs bathroom and where we would have thought nothing too this, an elderly person is very different and we have to put things where there was a step or something so she could think more and not have an accident. Again, this is not a down point, its just something to think of if you were taking an elderly person. It would also have been nice if the bird feeders had been filled up. It doesn't cost much for a little seed and there was so many birds around, you could wake to hear bird songs it was lovely.
