• About The Orangery

The Orangery is the perfect base for spending some well needed time with family, whilst exploring this beautiful location.

Set in 7 acres of landscaped and wild countryside, with only a 10-minute walk to the seaside, The Orangery at Elie House, is the ideal location for friends and family to spend some time together. Designed with large windows and glazed doors, the morning and evening sun illuminates the interior of this semi-detached town house. Immaculately-presented and thoughtfully furnished, the large well equipped kitchen, which also has a steam oven, allows guests to put their culinary skills to work. The whole family can sit around the dining room table, enjoy the views and plan the next day’s activity. The property is ideal for all ages, as there is a den that has an Xbox and TV for the little ones and for the grown up, the living room has a cosy gas wood-effect fire to relax in front of.
Elie House was built by Sir William Anstruther in 1697, on the site of an earlier mansion house which was built by Sir William Scott in the late 16th century. It is believed that a number of the windows on the south elevation of Elie House were retained and date back to that period. The house was acquired by William Baird in 1853, who subsequently sold it to Sir Michael Nairn in 1928. Sir Michael lived at Elie House from 1928 until he died in 1953. On Sir Michael’s death, his son, Sir George Nairn decided that Elie House was too large to be occupied as a private residence in post-war Britain. The house and gardens were sold to the Marie Reparatrice order of nuns to be used as a retreat, and The Orangery was built on the site of the chapel. Sir George also gifted Elie Harbour, formerly part of Elie Estate, to the village of Elie and a plaque remains on the harbour wall commemorating this gift. So if you want to visit an area steeped in history, then pack your bags and head over to The Orangery for an adventure of a lifetime. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.
If you can tear yourself away from this property, this area is renowned for its outdoor activities. From the front door you can roam freely in the grounds, perfect for leisurely walks and spotting the abundance of wildlife, including deer, wild birds and pheasants. Just a 10 minute walk and you are on the award-winning, wide sandy beach with its harbour. Elie Golf Club, with its highly acclaimed links course, is an attraction of the village, which also has a 9-hole course, tennis courts, and a bowling green. The Fife Coastal Path, which runs through the village, has historic castles, pretty fishing villages and many beautiful beaches and coves to discover along the way. Just 14 miles away is St Andrews, and Dundee, Perth and Edinburgh are within easy reach. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

We had a great holiday at the Orangery and would certainly recommend it. Very comfortable house, beautiful grounds, within easy walking distance to Elie and central to visit many other super places in Fife.

I stayed at The Orangery for four nights over New Year with my family, we are a group of six adults and two children. Without exception, everyone enthusiastically enjoyed our stay and I cannot fault the house in any way whatsoever. The location is less than a ten-minute walk from Elie and here you will find a good selection of small shops. The beach is large and the Fife Coastal Path leads off from it. Back to The Orangery - you will be impressed with the well-appointed kitchen and much to everyone's delight the full range of Sky & BT was available. We had to contact the owners with a question and they were most attentive and went out of their way to sort the problem quickly. We would definitely return to The Orangery and The East Neuk of Fife!

Great modern accommodation with four good bedrooms, large kitchen diner and comfortable lounge. And for four golfers, full Sky TV channels including sport and BT football was a winner.
