Because it's an old building it felt chilled, despite heating being on and radiators red hot, they seemed to struggle to take chill off rooms especially the lounge. As with all these properties the cupboard space isn't utilised to the best and there was no storage for groceries so they all stayed on the side getting in the way. Slight problem on arrival we couldn't get in because there were no keys, this was because the caretaker had not been informed the cottage had been booked for the weekend. Nice and quiet property and was a very chilled (excuse the pun) weekend.

A comfortable, quirky and characterful cottage. Spacious and very well equipped for two people. As others have mentioned, the shower room is small, but perfectly adequate and clean. It wasn't a problem for us, but it might be worth mentioning the steps into, and inside, the shower room. We really enjoyed our stay - we felt very much at home in the School House. If only the former teachers and pupils could see it now!

Lovely small cottage / bungalow right in the heart of Middleton-in-Teesdale. Downside was the parking, made difficult by the roadworks and a problem with the boiler (heating/water), which the caretaker needed to manually turn on morning and evening. Upside, well equipped, clean and so central to the village with its many amenities and walks. Would certainly recommend.

An excellent cosy and clean cottage, set just off the main street with shops tea rooms and plenty of places to eat out. Lovely walks nearby and a central location for visiting the Lake District and Durham.

Loved the position of The School House in relation to village facilities. Great walks around the village and alongside the river. The property was well looked after and comfortably equipped. You would need to be fairly able as there are a few steps both outside and inside to cope with. Not a huge problem but just to be aware of. All in all a lovely cottage and we are hoping to return.

This is a lovely cottage right in the heart of the village but tucked away so quiet. I would certainly recommend it to fit friends but for us it was not ideal. We were told there were two steps to the bathroom but they are actually in the bathroom with a corner basin on the first step up and a right angle turn to the very compact shower and toilet. the heated towel rail was right next to the toilet and also had to be negotiated. The caretaker Alistair is the local butcher and he was wonderful at fixing niggles such as the central heating.

Gorgeous little cottage, perfect for 2. Feels tranquil and secluded but has a lovely village and beautiful countryside on your doorstep as soon as you step back through the gate. I would definitely return.
