Chilham is on the North Downs National Trail and the ancient Pilgrim’s Way to Canterbury in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The property is within walking distance of the beautiful peaceful countryside including the Kent Downs woodland lakes and orchards. There are excellent walks from the cottage to Kings Wood 1500 acres where King Henry VIII hunted deer and to Godmersham Park visited by Jane Austen. Numerous other walks are nearby in the Stour Valley and Crundale Downs. In the village there are two pubs a train station short walk away and with direct trains to London Ashford Canterbury and Ramsgate bus stop services to Canterbury and Ashford and a post office. Groceries and fruit and vegetables can be purchased from nearby farm shops. Plenty of parking spaces are available in the nearby free car park 3-minute walk. Nice cottage in a wonderful location. Not the comfiest inside but pleasant enough. Don't quite understand why there's an table for 8 in the kitchen on a 2 man cottage.

We stayed at The Smithy for one week (29 June-6 July 2019) and would definitely recommend it. It was lovely to live in such an old cottage and in particular to be part of the life on the Tudor square. The locals in Chilham are exceptionally friendly. It would not suit a young family as there is nothing at all for children in the village, but it suited us perfectly for a restful and quiet stay. The shower was one of the best we've had ever after many stays in cottages over the last year. The only negative is the fact we had no dishwasher. We were advised prior to our arrival that it had broken down the previous week. We were told that an engineer should probably be out during our stay and we agreed to allow access at any time. However, we didn't receive any communication all week to explain what was happening and the dishwasher was not repaired.
