Located in a small, somewhat remote village called Sunniside, Vale cottage is tucked away from the main road in a quiet farmyard spot, offering spectacular views over rural farmland. With underfloor heating below the wood panelled floor, the property is both spacious and very well equipped. It was also spotlessly clean. Unfortunately Sunniside village appears to be too small to support any shops, which means the visitor will have to drive a few miles to stock up with everyday necessities. Fortunately the owner kindly left a few items in the fridge e.g. bread, butter, milk and bacon, to keep the wolf from the door on arrival. The village itself is not only remote but is also one of the highest points in County Durham. As a result, whilst most of the country was enjoying wall to wall sunshine, Sunniside was, for the first two days, in the clouds with dense fog to contend with on the road. Places that we visited on this trip that are worth a mention include Raby Castle, George Washington’s ancestral home, the Naval Museum at Hartlepool and a bit further afield, the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle. We also tried to see the cathedral at Durham but were unable to find a suitable parking place so returned back to the cottage. Perhaps the sat-nav was a little confused. That said, inasmuch as we actually drove into the city, we were stung with a congestion charge of £2, which I paid over the phone. Had I not paid, I may well have received a letter demanding payment of £50! Readers beware; drive into Durham at your own risk!

Lovely cottage on the edge of a farm. The views across the fields are pleasant and the morning visit of chickens often tickled the children. Only 30 minutes from Beamish and Durham and 45 minutes from Newcastle there was always something to keep us busy. The cottage is comfortable and warm - underfloor heating meant it was always cosy. Beds were sufficient and bathroom clean and the shower was good strength in the ensuite. The one criticism I would place on the kitchen utensils - some of the pans are a little tired and could be slightly better stocked.

A spacious and comfortable cottage, very good for someone with a disability. Generous welcome pack. It would benefit from a freezer rather than just ice box in fridge and a larger more modern Smart tv for the size of the room. WiFi is excellent. Altogether a very good holiday let.

We had an amazing stay. My daughter loved the chickens and dog that came to visit the cottage every morning. The horses in the field were another highlight for her. The cottage is spacious and well equipped. The very thoughtful welcome package was amazing, including lovely fresh cut flowers and our first mornings breakfast. We will hopefully come back to stay again

This is a lovely cottage and well equipped. The location is very quiet, within 5 minutes walking distance to a couple of public houses. The Moss Inn we can vouch for serves great food. The views from the cottage are good with a nice seating area. We totally recommend this cottage.

This holiday cottage was absolutely perfect, the photos on the internet don’t do it justice, it is beautiful. The owners are equally as pleasant. Is perfectly equipped for anyone who is disabled as a member of our family was. We didn’t want to leave & will definitely be returning!!!

We enjoyed staying at Vale Cottage for which was our 3rd visit in probably the last 4-5 years, the only issue we had was a slight blockage in the shower drain to the ensuite off the main bedroom, which was fixed within 24 hours.
