• About West Lodge

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these three delightful cottages (S4166, S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3.5 miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these three properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. West Lodge, ref S4166, is a charming 18th-century stone cottage enjoying its own garden with splendid views towards the Cheviots. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House. Lovely location so nice to just relax and walk around the grounds. Ladies in coffee shop were lovely nothing too much trouble. Some updating would enhance the property. A lovely break and we would like to return again for a longer period.

This is a well equipped cottage of character on lovely Mellerstain Estate. Peace and quiet - wonderful! Dark skies too. No light pollution here! Great views to the Cheviot Hills. Easy access to the Border abbeys and other historic properties. Don't miss nearby Smailholm Tower. Mellerstain House is exceptional. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly. A very relaxing holiday.

An ideal get away for dog owners and wild life lovers. Perched on the edge of the large estate, with enclosed garden for dogs, and an abundance of bird and animal life. The accomodation is simple and not fussy, so need to worry about dogs in and out, but adequate for the majority.

I've reviewed West Lodge before as we've stayed there many times. We love this peaceful spot and it is great for dog owners with a safe garden and beautiful walks straight from the door. The location is ideal for visiting all parts of the Scottish Borders and further afield to East Lothian and the Northumberland coast.
