The centre of the small town of Bellingham is within easy walking distance and has a choice of pubs, cafés, bakery, butcher and a large convenience store. On the edge of the Northumberland National Park, the largest Dark Sky Park in Europe, this location is perfect for visiting Kielder Observatory (booking essential) where you can be an astrologer for the evening. Kielder itself has some lovely picnic areas, watersports and visitor centres along the reservoir edge for adventure seekers, walkers and cyclists. Westfield Studio provides cycle storage too should you wish to bring your bikes with you. The historic town of Hexham is 20 miles away with the ancient abbey and weekly market. Take a trip over to the Northumberland Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which stretches for miles and has lots of friendly villages, historic castles and places to stop off for food and drinks.
The Scottish Border at Carter Bar is only 18 miles away. The Borders of Scotland and England are steeped in history and you can find out more at the Railway Carriage tea room and visitor centre in Bellingham. Otterburn, 9 miles, has an interesting mill shop full of outdoor wear at bargain prices.
