If peace and tranquillity is what you’re looking for then look no further than Winnow Cottage. The property is accessed by a ¼ mile rough, single bridle track, which can be difficult to access during winter months. The building dates back to the 1800s but has been refurbished in 2018 to a high standard. The open plan living and modern kitchen areas offer plenty of space and benefit from a lovely muti-fuel burner, perfect for snuggling up after a winter walk. The sun room opens on to an amazing decked area that looks out to natural beauty of the North York Moors National Park. Both of the bedrooms offer Freeview TVs, USB sockets and have en-suite shower rooms. The owner is a big dog lover and has retired from working as a puppy training supervisor with assistance dogs, so has thought of everything for your furry friends including an outdoor doggy shower, perfect for giving the dogs a wash after a walk out in the beautiful countryside that surrounds this semi-detached cottage.

Although there is a feel of being in the middle of nowhere, the village of Castleton is less than a mile away with a number of traditional, dog friendly pubs serving home cooked food, a tea room and a train station. You can even catch a train to Whitby and back if you want to leave the car behind for the day, and it is an ideal way to link up with the North Yorkshire Steam Railway for a journey into the heart of the National Park. There are many walking and cycling routes literally from the doorstep, including across to Danby Castle. Danby also has a visitors centre which is great for finding out more about what the area has to offer and about the nature that surrounds you. There is also a nearby bike hub that offers assistance with routes, rental and workshop facilities.

Head towards the coast and enjoy some of the spectacular coastline with a visit to one of many hidden gems such as Staithes, with its links to Captain Cook, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. You can also enjoy a stroll along the famous Cleveland Way along cliff tops and down into the coves and bays once frequented by pirates and smugglers. The popular fishing town of Whitby is a wonderful place to explore, whether it’s the cobbled back streets with its shops and tea rooms, or the foodie scene with everything from award winning fish and chips to bistros and coffee shops, there really is something for everyone. A trek up the 199 steps to get close to Whitby Abbey is worth the effort for the views out to sea and of the town alone. Whitby has many events and festivals all year round so keep an eye on the calendar for whats on when you visit and there are boat trips out to sea all year round (weather permitting) including trips in search of whales.
There are many wonderful towns and villages dotted throughout the National Park and beyond including Pickering, Helmsley and Hutton-le-Hole, all within an hours drive from Winnow Cottage, and plenty more for a day out a little further afield such as York, Ripon and Scarborough. Beach 8 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

What a beautiful cottage. We were welcomed by Sue the owner in person with fresh flowers in every room a loaf of bread, milk , butter and ginger cake , just so thoughtful. Central location for us as we busted Whitby , Robin Hood bay and Saltburn all only a short distance to travel . The bridal way gave us a lovely walk from the door step into Castleton with our little dog Molly . We would 100% recommend this outstanding cottage and hope to visit again .

Lovely cottage, beautifully clean. Idyllic location. Sue was a very unobtrusive neighbour and very accommodating when we arrived very late on the Friday evening. Highlight for me was the bird life there. Saw a green woodpecker and a greater spotted woodpecker amonget other things. Lovely, peaceful place to stay and a great base for exploring the North York Moors and East Coast. Fresh flowers and local bread and cake were a lovely touch. Would highly recommend.

The cottage has been beautifully converted and equipped and is superbly comfortable. We had no issue with WiFi; we used it to watch catchup and it seemed fine. Our Dacia handled the access track in first gear without complaint. We loved the fresh flowers, welcome pack of fresh food and milk, squashy armchairs (even in the bedroom) and sitting out on the decking watching baby rabbits in the woods. There are dozens of walks in easy reach - we recommend taking the train between stations and then walking back. We would have appreciated a tumble dryer but managed with heated towel rails. Castleton shops are limited but both Whitby and Guisborough have plenty of big supermarkets. Sue went out of her way to return a coat we had left behind and we cannot thank her enough.

A lovely cottage in a fantastic location. It was ideal for us with our two dogs. It’s out of the way so not ideal for local services but the quality, cleanliness and location more than made up for that.

We had a great time whilst staying in this beautiful cottage. It is a very well situated cottage for either walking the moors or walking the Cleveland Way. Lots of beutiful little moors vilages close by too. The owner, Sue, was very helpful with lots of good tips on where to go and what to do. The cottage was beutifully decorated with Christmas decorations and fairy lights. A little extra that went a long way to making our stay even more enjoyable. We obviously stayed in winter so it must be even better during the summer months when you can have breakfast outside on the patio. I would definitley recommend this cottage to friends.

Beautiful cottage. Everything you need supplied, including a bowl and towels for your dog! Sue is very friendly and helpful with places to go visit. House is really is cosy, with two bedrooms both en-suite. Track to the house is as described but easy to see the whole way along. Would definitely recommend and hope to return. Thank you x

My partner, 14 year old son and cocker spaniel had a super stay here. The cottage is very well located for local walks to nearby villages as well as along the Esk Valley. It is also only a 15 minute drive to the nearest coast at Saltburn and approx 30 minutes to Whitby. Our favourite beach was Sandsend - lovely cafe right on the beach and you can walk along the sandy beach to Whitby. The cottage itself had everything we needed and was very clean and well equipped. The dog shower outside was very beneficial after sandy walks along the beach! Sue, the owner, was very friendly and as well as helpful and informative. We had a lovely pub meal (also reasonably priced) at the The Duke of Wellington at nearby Danby. The log burner in the cottage provided us with a couple of lovely cosy nights in. We would definitely recommend.

We were a bit anxious about our booking having seen comments about the track to the cottage however we got an average hatchback down there with no problem. You just need to take it slow. The cottage having just been refurbished is immaculate and has everything you will need for a relaxing break. It's beautifully tranquil yet still a stroll in to the village for the pub where the locals were welcoming. Possibly one of my favourite spots was sat in the arm chair in the bedroom watching the birds flit around the garden. You needn't worry about the cold either, the radiators keep the place warm and with the fire on its toasty. We were there when storm Callum hit and took the power out briefly in the morning , with no power, phone or Internet we were at a bit of a loss what to do. The owner was wonderful and kept us up to date with where there was power and even rang round to find somewhere we could have breakfast with the dog. She was a star!
