Visit seaside resorts such as St Jean de Monts which hosts a daily market selling wonderful fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables; Les Sables d’Olonne, which has the nickname of mini-Nice for its long beach, bustling seafront and chic shops, and the Ile de Noirmutier, which is linked to the coast by causeway but worth the journey for the picturesque beaches. Biking around the region is fantastic; it’s flat and there are small forests with sandy cycle tracks through them. Ideal days out include Puy du Fou, a theme park that brings hundreds of years of history to life through exciting live-actions shows. Those with a head for heights can have great fun climbing and sliding down zip wires at Arbre Adventure, a tree adventure parc in St Jean de Monts. Also close by is the pretty village of Apremont, which has a medieval castle, a large lake and sandy beach, and St Gilles de Croix which is famed for its fresh sardines.
