the location was lovely, easy to find and the view overlooking the golf course was beautiful.
The lodge itself (woodpecker) was compact but nice, however on closer inspection it was not very clean.
The kitchen area was surface clean but the cooker hood, oven and kitchen blind looked as if they had never been cleaned. every time you opened the oven the smoke alarm went off.
The bedside cabinets had not even been wiped and there was dust and cup rings on them, I had to clean them myself.
The windows were dirty inside and out, the patio doors in the lounge so bad you couldn't see the lovely view. I did mention this after a few days and it got cleaned which was good.
the beds are very soft which for me gave me backache, but that is personal preference
on arrival there was no sign of anyone but the lodge was unlocked so we moved in. parking is not next to the lodge but in the golf course car park that is only a few steps away.
On the website it said we wold have a welcome pack including eggs and milk, there was no welcome pack. As we had not brought any milk we could not have a cup of tea. so the next morning I headed over to the clubhouse and mentioned the lack of welcome pack, they were caught of guard and said the owner must have forgot. On reading other reviews it appears he forgets all the time, so don't expect a welcome pack. There is no shop on site and as I would need to drive to get any milk I asked if they could sell me some, the bar staff then gave me a pint of milk with no charge. However on later coming to use the milk it was a day out of date, so still no cup of tea.
The kitchen area needs a few more items and topping up with more plates/dishes. there were only two teaspoons for example.
in the lodge there is a menu for the clubhouse and you can order food from them to take away. however please be aware they are only open while it is light.
so on afternoon my son and I fancied a scone, the picture on the golf website looks amazing. the menu said they were £1.80 each so I sent son over with a fiver. he asked for two scones with cream and waited ages whilst they prepared them. the staff gave him two plates and two cups of tea and asked for £7. it appears they gave him two afternoon teas as they are £3.50 on the menu. however an afternoon tea would include a scone as well as sandwich and other bits. what he bought back after giving them the fiver I sent was not afternoon tea. it was a large white burger roll filled with some smoked cheese and a bit of lettuce, there was so much margarine in clumps it was inedible, there was a dry inedible cupcake, a few crisps and a strawberry and a quality street sweet. NO scones at all. It was not nice any of it so went in the bin. please be aware when ordering a take out and check what is under the foil before paying. we didn't order from there again.
There is large Sainsbury supermarket about fifteen minutes drive away on a retail park so we went there for supplies.
The hot tub was great, nice and big and clean and hot. However they are not private, as the cabins are all in a row all the hot tubs can be seen form all the lodges, it would definitely benefit from privacy screens. Also the owner comes round each morning to check the hot tub and every morning he turns it down so if we didn't notice and rectify it by the time we got in in the evening the hot tub was too cold for us. we like it at 40 and he turned it down to 36/37 eery day. one day he even turned it off at the wall, it was turned off also when we arrived. I did ask him about this but he just denied it and changed the subject. The was very weird and along with the dirt spoilt out holiday and means we would not return.
However the location is amazing, my husband the golfer, played the course three times and says it is a brilliant course, he loved it.
This lodge could be amazing with some very low cost attention, a privacy screen, fully top up the kitchen and a proper clean. But mostly stop turning down the hot tub, we lost two days of use due to it being too cold and as that along with the golf course is the main feature it needs to be usable everyday.
