• About Clock House

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these three delightful cottages (S4166, S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3.5 miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these three properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. West Lodge, ref S4166, is a charming 18th-century stone cottage enjoying its own garden with splendid views towards the Cheviots. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House.

The cottage was comfortable and in lovely setting. Ideal for a relaxing holiday with many of the home comforts. The gardens were beautiful the only thing letting us down was the wet weather as I had taken my telescope for some dark sky observations of the night sky. I would advise other visitors to use the wide range of restaurants and eateries in nearby Kelso. The only real issue was that neither of the fans in the bathrooms worked and the one on the first floor could with a clean and service.

Fantastic break, beautiful surroundings, complete rest, quiet and relaxation. Loved every minute and will definately return as soon as we can. The only recommendations for future guests would be, putting none slip matts into the in bath showers and daily changes of towels if staying for longer than 2 Days, although there is a machine in the cottages, but many travellers don't want to waste time washing and drying towels. Suggest putting used towels in bag outside cottage in the morning to be swapped for clean for our return. Otherwise fantastic accomodation and will definately recommend and return.

The cottage was fine, not very homely. No milk, flowers, wine etc which would be nice on arrival. The oven is absolutely filthy and that definitely needs sorting. The location is fantastic but there needs to be more attention to detail in the cottage, it's just not clean even the outside was dirty. Bed was comfortable though. The staff at Mellerstain could not have been more helpful.

Cottage in beautiful area the courtyard looked lovely with climbing roses and filled plant pots around. Staff very friendly and helpful. Cottage equipment could be better sharper knives needed! Apart from that very comfy and great estate to wander around, house and formal gardens are so beautiful. Would recommend the estate for relaxing holiday but near to so many interesting places to visit

Great place and had a great week even though it rained! We didn't realise the house wasn't open all week so we didn't get chance to visit! The shower screen could have done with a better clean but apart from that, everything else was clean, tidy and easy to find! Really enjoyed!

We had a fantastic holiday. We have rented many holiday cottages over the last few years and this has been the best one yet :-)

spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable cottage set in a tranquil beautiful estate. Ideally located for easy access to all the wonderful sights in the borders. Dog friendly. Very pleasant and friendly staff and estate workers. The only minor item is that there are limited cooking equipment and it would be very beneficial if there was a "pyrex" type casserole dish(es), with a lid, for use both in the oven and in the microwave.

Although dogs allowed in cottage, not allowed off leash within 200 acres of grounds & woods. We were accused (falsely) by gamekeeper acting on phone call from "the big house" of allowing our dog to chase pheasants. Never nice being falsely accused of anything but that was our Christmas Day morning. Took the shine off a relaxing break. Nice place but not dog friendly.

The cottage was nice although chilly with a complicated lighting system and door handles that were difficult. However, it was advertised as being dog friendly and there was no where on the estate where our dogs could exercise off the lead and no information as to where they could. If you check with the Dogs Trust you will find out that such exercise is now a requirement
