We loved our stay at the very quirky and cosy mushroom cottage. Was in an ideal location with everything in walking distance. The cottage could do with a little tlc in Certain areas and was missing a few thoughtful things that make it that extra special. All in all we had a great stay and loved the Peak District.

Beautiful cottage, we had a lovely week and will definitely return. Wet room could do with an update hence the 9, otherwise a perfect break.

An absolutely adorable little cottage! Teeny tiny but that really did add to the charm. I went for four nights with my partner, and I'd say it was perfect for a young couple like us. You might struggle with the tight spiral staircase if you are on the larger side, or if you are very tall or stiff. I'm about 5"10 and found it fine but still a little bit uncertain on the stairs. No problems though. You walk through the front door (using a key from the safe outside) and you're immediately in the bedroom. A very nice, rustic double with a lot of storage space for its size. Nice comfy bed, shutters and curtains keep it nicely dark for a lie-in. Facing the bed is a small TV. I noticed from a previous review that the only thing lacking was a Sky box for more channels. Well, that reviewer was heard! And there is now a Sky box! Bathroom is snug but looks very pretty. Great shower gets as hot and powerful as you like, and still wonderfully rustic-looking. A bit spidery when I was there, but there's nothing you can do about that really. Upstairs, the staircase leads right into the little kitchen with all amenities, and beyond that is a lovely little lounge with sofa, bookcase, boardgames and a couple of plug sockets. There was some fresh milk already in the fridge which was much appreciated, a microwave, a coffee maker and a hob and oven which we didn't use. Gorgeous views of rolling hills from the windows. We don't drive but this was a GREAT holiday as there was plenty of stuff in very easy walking distance. The furthest we had to walk for anything was Speedwell Cavern and that was only about 20 mins from the cottage. Loads of fantastic country pubs to choose from, we're pretty sure we ate/drank in all of them. Peak Cavern and Peveril Castle are both very close (5 min walk), and worth seeing. Overall I was very happy with my stay here in Castleton, and Mushroom cottage made all those good times even better! If you are coming by train, don't rely on local taxis as I really struggled to find any good numbers. But the busses are great, cheap and drop you less than a ten min walk to the cottage.

A tiny but we'll laid out cottage well located within easy walking distance of a good selection of local pubs. Castleton is also ideally located close to 2 or 3 beautiful walks where you do not necessarily need to use a car. Mushroom cottage it a real treat a boasts a good fully equipped kitchen and also a comfortable bed.

We enjoyed our stay in Castleton very much the location was excellent, the cottage was good however certain things could be improved these are :- 1. New Sofa for lounge this we found not to be very comfortable as the upholstery has lost its spring 2. The tv in bedroom with the sky box and dvd player needs moving from bedroom to the lounge . 3.oven door does not close properly(did leave note for housekeeper) this allows heat to escape from oven making it difficult to cook properly. other than the above it was generally a pleasant property .

A cosy, well appointed cottage in a lovely location, impeccably clean and with a nice history that you can read about in the info book. We didn't want for anything in terms of creature comforts, kitchen equipment or little cottagey touches (except the fact the wood burner is electric - big disappointment). To be fair, we're being a bit picky, because we WERE very comfortable the whole time. But the impression we had was that it has been renovated with love... a few too many years ago. For the money you pay, there are many bits that are worn. The bathroom/wet room smells of damp, the old sofa is almost threadbare and gives you back pain, the paint on the kitchen floor is all but peeled off. The outdoors space is a mess, weeds everywhere, green moss on the seats and table and all full of cobwebs that should have been washed off in time for summer. In contrast to the cottage we stayed last year, in which you could feel the love in every square inch of the place, we just didn't really feel valued as high paying customers and although the location is perfecto - we wouldn't come back.

very compact place we liked it. had a great location for local walks - bus station just down the road and railway station within a half hour walk - although the boiler is noisy it didn't bother us too much

Lovely cottage, great location. Was a little cold but it was probably the coldest weekend of the year that we went there. Will definitely be returning.

We stayed in Mushroom Cottage over the New Year holiday. It had charm and was in a fantastic location (on a quiet lane with views, walks from the door and a great village with 6 pubs just 4 minutes’ walk away), so we really wanted to love it, but too many aspects were awkward and uncomfortable. The main living area was even smaller than it looked in the website photos (the owners have updated them since our stay), and was disproportionate to the spacious kitchen area. The 2-seater sofa (sofa-bed) was uncomfortable, with a hard seat, worn cushions and very low backrest. The upstairs TV had problems with BBC reception. The kitchen area was generous and attractive but lacked some basic equipment, e.g. salad/mixing bowl, peeler, full-size casserole dish, scissors and oven gloves. The pots were worn with the non-stick coating scratched or bubbled, and saucepans were small. For washing-up there was watered down washing-up liquid and a used brush (it would cost pennies to provide a clean washing-up sponge). For dining there was a tiny folding table (with 8 thick legs affording little room for human legs) and two stools. Downstairs, the bedroom area was spacious with a comfortable bed, but on one side the street light seeped around the curtains, and on the other we were overlooked by next door so had to keep the curtain drawn. The “wet room” was tiny, although the shower area was pleasant and the shower itself good. The lack of space means the toilet is wedged against the wall, making it make it awkward and uncomfortable to use (good job we’re both slim!). The whole floor became wet after using the shower, making getting to the loo difficult. The boiler was noisy, its roar and judder punctuated by groans and whistles when the hot water was on. Because there are no internal doors to the cottage, the noise woke us in the morning and was audible throughout. With a few changes and a bit of money spent on it, this could be a cosy and comfortable little holiday rental, but for the price we paid I was disappointed.

Had a lovely stay. The only things needed are a flat sceen tv with free view or box in the living area. We have already booked for next year.
