• About West Lodge

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these three delightful cottages (S4166, S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3.5 miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these three properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. West Lodge, ref S4166, is a charming 18th-century stone cottage enjoying its own garden with splendid views towards the Cheviots. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House.

I've reviewed West Lodge before as we've stayed there many times. We love this peaceful spot and it is great for dog owners with a safe garden and beautiful walks straight from the door. The location is ideal for visiting all parts of the Scottish Borders and further afield to East Lothian and the Northumberland coast.

Lovely location - would re-visit. Enjoyed our stay & our visits to Brittania & various castles. Fittings a little dated but o.k. for the price.

lovely cottage in wonderful surroundings and the lady from mellerstain house is delightful, but the matresses and chairs could do with an upgrade.also in summer need something lighter than 13 tog duvets. As the shower is over the bath and no grab rail is not suitable for elderly ,but owner told us she would rectify this and she is certainly a lady of her word.

West Lodge is a cosy bungalow just inside the west gate of the park round Mellerstain House, I enjoyed walking the dogs through the park to the east gate each morning. The house and gardens are open to the public across the weekend and worth a visit. The Hoebridge café in the courtyard serves good lunches and cakes. There are ruined abbeys and towers to explore locally and grand old houses/castles to visit. The cottage is a good base to explore from.

Good holiday. Dogs loved it as did I. Grounds are absolutely beautiful and well cared for as is the lodge garden. Lodge was clean and comfortable with plenty of space. Bedrooms were extremely comfortable and well dressed. Beautiful healthy plants for sale at Mellorstone House (bought lots for my garden and all doing well at home). We had a very relaxing holiday and enjoyed exploring Melrose, Kelso and Berwick. Great restaurant (The Hoebridge) in nearby village of Gattonside is not to be missed. Food was delicious, service first class and decor relaxing and calming. The owners of The Hoebridge also manage the cafe/restaurant within the grounds of Mellerstone House......you must try the orange chocolate cake as it is fantastic!

Lovely peaceful location for a relaxing break. Fully enclosed, well-kept garden and lovely walks nearby made it perfectly dog-friendly. All the basics were supplied and the cottage was exceptionally clean. Thoughtful extras included birdseed to refill the feeders for the plentiful visitors, and a fire ready to light (though we didn't need it as we had a beautiful sunny week, and central heating provided sufficient background warmth). The shower is a little tricky to use for elderly guests as there are no hand rails to help climb in and out of the bath, but otherwise the cottage was comfortable and excellent value. We absolutely love this part of the Borders, and there are plenty attractions to visit locally. Not everywhere is open before Easter, which does make for lovely quiet walks! The cottage feels private and secluded, but is just a stroll from the beautiful Mellerstain House and gardens. Would highly recommend.
