Bowness is one of Cumbria’s most popular all-year-round destinations and one of the main centres for Outdoor Activities in the UK with many adventure companies, guides and instructors based here. One easy 5-mile walk that can be done on your own is located in Buttermere. This glacial lake sits beneath lush pines and snow-capped fells, in the winter. This family-friendly walk around the water takes around three hours, and along the way, you will spot a red-door bothy and a natural black rock amphitheatre on the eastern edge. Part of the path leads underground through tunnels under Harness Woods, so remember your torch!
If you prefer something a bit more cultural ‘The World of Beatrix Potter’ may be more appealing, where you can discover Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and all their friends. This is a magical indoor recreation where you can also learn more about Beatrix Potter’s life and for some fresh air venture into Peter Rabbit’s Garden with cabbages and the garden gate Peter squeezed under trying to escape Mr McGregor!
The Lake District Visitor Centre is a one-stop shop for the best of the Lakes, featuring sprawling parkland, beautiful English gardens, access to the majestic Lake Windermere, and activities galore! Cumbria's natural beauty extends beyond the Lake District. Discover the awe-inspiring scenery of the Eden Valley or wander along the dramatic coastline of the Solway Firth. Visit the historic sites of Carlisle Castle or delve into the mysterious ruins of Hadrian's Wall. Indulge in the region's culinary delights, from traditional Cumberland sausage to delicious homemade sticky toffee pudding. Sample locally brewed ales and visit charming tearooms for a taste of Cumbrian hospitality.
There are family-friendly events on offer all year round (think archery; bird-watching; even wilderness survival skills!), but you will need to book these in advance as the spaces fill up fast. Brockhole’s lakeside location means it is also a great place to start your Lakes adventure. Catch a boat from Windermere and head north, or explore the lush natural scenery with a trek around the Lake District National Park.
