Positano is famous for hosting celebrity marriages, while Amalfi and Atrani, like Sorrento, both retain atmosphere of their glamorous pasts. Cliff-top Ravello is a “must-see” and hosts the Ravello Festival” for two months of the Summer. Within easy driving distance are the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD and Vesuvius itself is worth a visit. Rome can be visited within a day.
All of the resorts have restaurants and cafes, the vast majority offering outside dining. The neighbouring towns and villages all have their own restaurants, where the standards are equally high and prices much lower. Local specialities use locally-produced olive oil, cheeses and fruits, including excellent pizzas and pastas and lots of seafood on the coast. After dinner, enjoy the local lemon liqueur “limoncello”.
Positano and Sorrento have many smart designer shops and also souvenir shops offering handicrafts, jewellery, embroidery, fashions and local delicacies. The many hillside towns and villages of the Sorrentine Peninsula all have a good selection of shops and regular markets.
