Aysgarth Falls

Aysgarth Falls

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales - as featured in films such as "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" - Aysgarth Falls is an awe-inspiring sight for visitors of all ages. The falls are actually made up of a series of three cascades, each unique in their own right. The upper falls are the tallest, plummeting down over limestone steps, while the middle and lower falls provide a more gentle and picturesque setting. You'll find the falls on the River Ure in Upper Wensleydale, close to the small villages of Aysgarth and Carperby, and only a short drive from the bustling market town of Leyburn. There's a small fee to park at the start of the trail, but the falls themselves are free to visit.

Tip: There is a visitor centre with toilets, cafés and picnic benches, although it isn't open all year round. The best time to visit Aysgarth Falls is from April-October, when the falls are open 10am-5pm seven days a week.

The waterfall itself, which occupies a pretty spot in the beck known as West Burton Falls, is smaller than some of the others on our list. The real draw here is the deep pool at the bottom of the falls, which is where the name "Cauldron" Falls comes from - it's very popular for paddling and wild swimming. This is also a popular spot along the Turner Trails, as it was painted by the renowned artist during his travels around Yorkshire in 1816.

Postcode: DL8 4JP (on-street parking on Front Nook Road in West Burton village)
Difficulty: Easy - you can reach the falls by following the footpath from West Burton
