A fantastic break, the house is absolutely beautiful and the feeling of space is amazing, the facilities are great, including the hot tub and games room which really add to the relaxed atmosphere. While we were there the weather was mixed but this did not have any impact on our enjoyment of the property with so much interior space and fantastic views particularly the huge tree in the field behind. If you are looking to relax and enjoy family time Applegarth will not disappoint. Chrissy was a fantastic host and left a lovely welcome package for us and our dog. A fantastic overall package and highly recommended!

Applegarth House was perfect for a reunion of our family and friends from Australia. We were three families - six adults and four small children. The house was sparkling clean and big enough for us all to have our private spaces and the children could run around freely and play with the amazing amount of toys. The garden was secure and we could close the gate and leave the children to play on the outdoor equipment or kick a ball around on the lawn. The hot tub on the deck at the back was an added bonus. Despite the changeable weather we managed lunch outside one day, looking out over the fields, bordered by poppies, cornflowers, marigolds and dog daisies. The golf addicts watched the Open in the comfort of the games room and attempted billiards. This was a real plus as none of us had stayed in a house with a games room before. There was plenty of room in the kitchen for several cooks and more than enough room for us all to sit around the table. We ate Sunday lunch at the very friendly Top House in Counden – roasts only on a Sunday – but the menu for the rest of the week looked tempting. Lastly, Chrissie the owner was on hand to answer any queries and to provide anything we asked for, including a hair dryer which none of us had thought to bring. All in all a very enjoyable weekend in a very comfortable house.

Had a pleasant stay whilst there however greedy owner retained £50 of security deposit for leaving glass ring marks on the worktops... also charged us £13 for a glass dish that was accidentally broken and accused us of having the dog upstairs which was rubbish. Better places to stay, if you do go pls pay any security deposits to the letting agent & not the greedy owner !!

We booked Applegarth for a family get-together, ten of us from three generations including four children between the ages of nine and twelve. We had an amazing weekend, mainly because the house was the perfect setting - the weather was unusually cold for May with rain and hail showers, but in spite of that the hot tub was a huge success, especially with the children (but also with the younger adults late at night after the children had gone to bed!). The cosy games room with pool table and X-box was also very popular, and in general we found that Applegarth offered an ideal combination of comfortable spaces for us all to be together, and room to spread out at times. The wood burner in the sitting room made it a lovely warm comfortable place to gather in the evenings. The house was immaculate when we arrived, and we received a warm welcome from head cleaner Julie who showed us where everything was. The house is in a country setting, which is why I gave it a score of 9 - very beautiful outlook over the fields, but you generally need to drive to get to places. This wasn’t a major problem for us, but worth being aware of - though we were able to get an online grocery delivery on arrival and two takeaway deliveries without difficulty! Overall a super experience, and we will happily recommend it to our friends - and hopefully return at some point!

My family and I had a lovely weekend here and we would definitely recommend. They catered for family's and was very thoughtful. They had toys for the kids and plastic cups and plates there too. There was plenty to do in and out of the house. The lady I dealt with to get the keys and to return them was lovely. I would like to return one day.

We were a family of 10. Grandparents to Grandchildren. We were blessed with beautiful weather and fighting to get in the hot tub. The views were stunning, peaceful backdrop and spacious accommodation.Oceans of indoor space and the Grandchildren loved the pool table! We would definitely recommend!

A great stay seeing family who live in the local area. The owners were very welcoming, were on hand when we needed any assistance and provided great facilities for the children. Would definitely stay again.

    Really enjoyed our stay here

We all loved the cottage. It is extremely spacious for 10 adults. Beautifully decorated! We weren’t keen on the local village but views from house are incredible. Only thing we would have liked were additional pans as we made a Christmas dinner but I’m sure if we had asked this would have been accomplished by the host. We will definitely return in the future.

Had an amazing weekend for my daughter's 18th birthday. The cottage is lovely with everything you could possibly need. The kids loved the hot tub as did the adults looking out over the fields on a chilly evening. The owners were very helpful and the prosecco, biscuits and dog treats were a lovely welcome treat! We would certainly return again for another family gathering

The house was lovely & large, well equipped & comfortable. The prosecco, sweets & dog treats from the owner was a nice touch. Unfortunately the location for us was a huge disappointment. The pub that was said to be located a mile from the house was not suitable for walking along to with your family for a spot of lunch & wasn’t even open! Bishop Auckland wasn’t much better. If you are happy to stay put in the house the whole time the view is lovely !

We had a fabulous weekend spent with friends at the cottage. It was clean and comfortable. The games room and hot tub were an added bonus and made it extra special. We could of stayed there longer and will definitely be returning!

We recently returned from a wonderful holiday at Applegarth House. Situated in a lovely quiet rural location it offers magnificent views as far as the eye can see. The accommodation is spacious, welcoming and well furnished throughout and enabled us all to enjoy our own space. The children thoroughly enjoyed everything it had to offer, there were toys, books and games for indoor play; a games room with their own pool table, sofa and TV; and large safe garden for them to let off steam. We all enjoyed the hot tub, the children were in and out all day and the adults enjoyed it at the end of the day with a glass of wine watching the sun go down and soaking up the views. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.
