Perched above the traditional village of Coniston, Carrie’s Gate enjoys wonderful views across one of Lakeland’s quietest and most iconic waters, made famous by Donald Campbell’s Bluebird and the setting for Swallows & Amazons. Set against a backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery, Carrie’s Gate is ideal for couples and families alike and for years has provided the perfect location for romantic getaways, family adventures and walkers of all ages and abilities, with Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells quite literally on your doorstep.
For a leisurely day you can stroll from the cottage down to the lake shore area and indulge in a relaxing trip on the National Trust’s faithfully restored steamboat Gondola, followed by afternoon tea and cake at the Bluebird Café, featured in recent TV dramas set in the Lakes. Coniston has a good variety of places to eat, with 5 traditional Lakeland pubs, including the home of the Best Beer in Britain winning Bluebird Bitter, produced at the micro-brewery in the village plus the award winning Steam Bistro, all within a 10-minute walk of the cottage.
There are local shops for all your holiday provisions including an excellent butcher stocking fell bred meat, an artisan bakery and independent pizza, Indian and fish and chip shop takeaways. With a newly re-furbished, modern, luxury kitchen for the 2020 season, Carrie’s Gate offers exceptionally comfortable accommodation including a traditional multi fuel stove as a focal point in the cosy lounge for tired dogs to snooze in front of after a hard days walk, with the views across Coniston Water from the front windows never far away.
A sunny garden just across the lane from the cottage gives you the option to dine al-fresco and watch the sun set slowly over the lake. The owners have provided excellent facilities to create a genuine ‘home from home’ experience to ensure you’ll get the very best out of your stay including high quality broadband so younger members of your party will be happy to know Instagram and Facebook are still available. There’s a Smart TV with free OnDemand and Netflix accounts, plus a great selection of books and games for those rainy days. Two private parking spaces are available at the end of the terrace.
