Dorothy Forster Court is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in Alnwick. This charming Grade II listed property dates back to the 17th-century and is located only a few yards from the entrance to Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The property is accessed via a private doorway on Narrowgate where a small passageway leads to its independent entrance. The accommodation is well presented over the first and second floors of the property and is stylishly furnished throughout. The adorable arched door leads to three steps then a further eight to the first floor where there is a bright and airy open plan living space, there is also a bathroom and bedroom which overlooks a delightful courtyard. Further stairs leads up to the second floor where there is a king size bed nestled within beautiful original solid beams and views to the castle.Although the owner’s do not provide a cot, guests are welcome to bring their own.

Dorothy Forster and her brother Tom originally lived in Bamburgh Castle, which had been owned by the Forster family from the 16th century. During the Jacobite Rebellion, Tom enlisted to fight for the Stuart cause and was captured and put in Newgate Goal, London. In a daring plan Dorothy disguised as a servant, travelled to London and using a duplicate key, helped her brother escape and he fled to France. Dorothy arranged for a coffin to be filled with sawdust and placed in the family vault at Bamburgh to outwit the authorities. After Tom’s death in 1738, his body was returned to England and laid to rest in St Aidan’s Church in Bamburgh, and Dorothy was buried alongside him.

There is a wide array of amenities including a cinema/playhouse, restaurants, independent shops and a variety of pubs available within a gentle stroll from Dorothy Forster Court. Alnwick Castle, the film location for ’Harry Potter’s Hogwarts’ is a popular visitor attraction, or visit the Alnwick Gardens, a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including a grand cascade waterfall and poison garden. Visitors can also dine in the restaurant of the largest tree house in Europe. Dorothy Forster Court is an excellent choice for those seeking a unique base that gives easy access to explore the beautiful 20 mile stretch of Heritage Coastline, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east and the wild and lonely expanses of the heather-capped Cheviot Hills to the west. Only disappointment was female hygiene products still in bin and a couple of dishes in cupboard not clean... Probably related to previous occupant but didn't spoil our holiday.

Great central location, easy to walk to local pubs, shops, restaurants. Cottage was well equipped, clean and a welcome hamper was provided with some essentials (very much appreciated after a long drive).

I was drawn to Dorothy Forster Court by its history, and was delighted from the very first moment by its welcoming, comfortable charm - from the Darling dining table to the vaulted upper bedroom ceiling and views to the castle walls. Thoughtfully well appointed, clean and in an ideal location, it makes the perfect place to stay.

Spent three nights here at mid term with my hubby and 2 boys aged 15 and 12. We had a lovely relaxing time. The accommodation had everything we needed, was cosy, comfortable, and we all slept like babies. There are lots of quirky little details in the house to add interest and spark conversation. We liked the little luggage labels dotted about with useful hints and tips for maximum enjoyment of the property. The owners were helpful in providing all the arrival info we needed, and left a more than generous hamper of provisions in the property for us. The house is ideally located to explore Alnwick and surrounding areas easily. We all agreed we would like to stay again.

2, Dorothy Forster Court was beautiful from beginning to end. The hosts were super helpful and the place was perfect! Clean, comfy, great location and felt like a home away from home - if not better than home. We didn't want to leave! I wouldn't think twice about staying here again as I am sure we will. Thank you for having us and thank you for making our stay in Alnwick a trip to remember.

A perfect holiday retreat. A beautiful holiday cottage that only lacked a real fire in what can only be described as a magnificent fire place. Otherwise all was lovely for a winter retreat.

Amazing holiday home. We loved everything about it. It was beautiful! From the décor to the little helpful hints which were lovingly pinned up around the house. Such a well equipped holiday home. The beds were also really comfy and the whole house had a cosy, welcoming feel to it. Brilliant location too. The welcome hamper was also a really nice touch. We will definitely be booking again.

Two of us stayed for four days in early Sept 2018. The town of Alnwick is a great place to visit and we were right in the centre of it at this residence. Despite the proximity to the centre of town, there was no road noise or nighttime disturbance - the area was very quiet. There were ample eating and drinking establishments within walking distance. The historic nature of the building has been retained with a thoughtful renovation to allow for modern amenities. The residence is well equipped and could have easily accommodated more guests. The kitchen was well set up and adequately provisioned to provide genuine 'self catering' accommodation. The parking permit was a real bonus as we were on a five week road trip around the UK and so needed to have somewhere for the car. We were extremely happy with our stay here and highly commend this property to others.
