These two are lived in today, but you can also visit the beautiful ruins of Lindisfarne on Holy Island, Dunstanburgh and Warkworth.
Inland a trip to the Borders will be equally rewarding for its scenery and history. LNER runs a mainline route through Berwick train station, a 15 minute easy walk, you are an hour from Edinburgh or Newcastle and a comfortable four and a half from London.
